ماwhat حَالُis the state مَنْof one whose جُثْمانُهhis body وفُؤادُهand his heart
قَدindeed عاثَhas wrought havoc فيهin him نُحولُهhis wasting وجوَادُهُand his burning thirst
What is the state of one whose body and heart
What is the state of one whose body and heart
Have been ravaged by his wasting and burning thirst?
Have been ravaged by his sorrows and passions?
غَرِيَclung الغَرامُpassion بهِto him فَحَيثُso where هُجُوعهhis slumber
مِنْfrom قَبْلbefore أنْthat يَهْوَىhe loves فثَمَّthen there سُهادُهُhis sleeplessness
Passion clung to him; where he used to slumber
Love has fooled him, so before he fell
Before he loved, there now is his sleeplessness.
His place of rest became where he collapsed.
فتَضَرّمَتْso blazed مِنْfrom لَوْعَةٍburning anguish أنْفاسُهُhis breaths
وتصَرَّمَتْand dwindled away فيin حَسْرَةٍsorrow آمَادُهُhis days
So his breaths blazed with burning anguish,
His breath was filled with agonizing pain,
And his days dwindled away in sorrow.
And his supports were crushed by regret.
وكأنَّماand as though صَوْبُthe downpour العِهادthe successive rains دُموعُهhis tears
وكأنَّماand as though شَوْكُthorns القَتادِthe tragacanth shrub مِهادُهُhis bedding
As though the downpour of successive rains were his tears,
His tears seem like the true covenants,
And as though tragacanth thorns were his bedding.
And his deathbed seems strewn with brambles.
واهاًalas لَهُfor him مِنْsuch a مُفْرَدٍsolitary one بِنَحيبِهِwith his sobbing
لَوْif only كانَwas يَجْمَعُbringing together شَمْلَهhis scattered life إفْرَادُهُhis solitude
Alas for him, alone in his sobbing!
Alas for him – separated in his weeping –
If only his solitude could bring him reunion!
If only his isolation could bring him together!
يَرْتاحُhe delights للرَّوْضِin the meadow المَشُوقِlove-stricken حَمَامُهits doves
ويحِنُّand yearns للبَرقِfor the lightning الخَفوقِflickering فُؤادُهُhis heart
He delights in the meadow whose doves are lovesick,
His darling would delight in the lovely garden,
And his heart yearns for the flickering lightning.
And his heart would yearn for the flashing lightning.
ويَبيتُand he spends the night بَينَbetween تَشَوُّقٍyearning يَقْتَادُهُthat drives him
وَلَعاًin infatuation وبَيْنَand between تأرُّقٍsleeplessness يَعْتَادُهُthat revisits him
He spends the night between longing that drives him
He spends the night torn between violent desire
Into passion, and sleeplessness that revisits him.
And never-ending torment that wears him out.
والنّجْمُand the star يُسْعِدُهhelps him عَلىin خلْعِcasting off الكَرىslumber
ومِنand part of الشّقَاوَةِmisery فيin الهَوىlove إِسْعادُهُhelping him
And the star helps him cast off slumber;
Good fortune in love consoles him for losing all,
Yet in love, such help is itself misfortune.
Yet his bliss in passion brings him woe.
وهُناكَand there يُنْكِرُهdoes not recognize him الضُّحىdaylight وبَيَاضُهand its whiteness
وهناكَand there يَعْرفُهknows him الدُّجَىnight's darkness وَسَوادُهُand its blackness
And there, daylight and its whiteness do not recognize him,
The dawn there denies him, in its whiteness,
And there, night's darkness and its blackness know him.
While the gloom knows him, in its blackness.
قَصَرَتْshortened مَسَافَةَthe span عُمْرِهِof his life حَسْنَاؤُهُhis fair beloved
فَأَطالَتِso prolonged البُشْرىglad tidings بهِabout him حُسّادُهُhis enviers
His fair beloved shortened the span of his life,
His loved one shortens the length of his life,
So his enviers prolonged their rejoicing over him.
Yet his enemies prolong the good tidings about him.
وَغَدَتand she began تَشُوبُto mingle لهfor him المَوَدّةaffection بالقِلىwith aversion
وهوَwhile he الصّريحُunalloyed صَفَاؤُهُhis sincerity ووِدَادُهُand his affection
And she began to mingle affection for him with aversion,
Suspicion adulterates the affection she bears him
Though his sincerity and love are unalloyed.
While he is candid, pure and true in his love.
حَجَزَتْhas held back إِصَابَةُthe wounding نَفسِهِof his soul وغَلِيلهand his burning anguish
وأنينهand his moaning وعَويلُهُand his wailing أشْهَادُهُhis witnesses
His soul's wound has held him back; his burning anguish
The wounding of his soul, his sickness and groaning
And his moans and wails are his witnesses.
Bare witness, though his witnesses are masked.
ولَقَدand indeed يُسَرُّhe is gladdened لأنّهُbecause he يَاO وَيْلَهُwoe to him
إنif حُمّis decreed عَنْthrough لَحَظَاتِهاher glances اسْتِشَهادُهُhis martyrdom
And he is indeed glad, for—alas for him!—
It saddens him – woe is he! – that they
His martyrdom, if decreed, is through her glances.
Will not let his death be a martyr’s.
لاdo not تَعْذِلُوهُrebuke him عَلىfor الهَوىlove فَمَدَارُهfor his orbit
وَكَفاهُand it suffices him عُذْراًas an excuse حَيثُwherever طابَis sweet مُرَادُهُthe object of his desire
Do not reproach him for love, for his orbit lies—
Do not reproach him for his love, for his only goal
And this is excuse enough—wherever his heart's desire is sweet.
Is seemly, however pure his passion seems.
