لعمرby the life of الجواءal-Jiwāʾ بمزخورهِwith its overflowing abundance
لعمر الجواء بمزخورهِ
علىupon المغتديthe morning visitor وعلىand upon الطارقthe night caller
على المغتدي وعلى الطارق
By the life of al-Jiwāʾ, with its overflowing abundance,
By the life of the gleaming full moon
upon the morning visitor and upon the night caller,
Upon the transgressor and upon the night visitor
لقدindeed صدقwas true to اللّهGod فيin سعيهhis striving
لقد صدق اللّه في سعيه
وماand not الكاذبُthe insincere one السعيin striving كالصادقlike the sincere one
وما الكاذبُ السعي كالصادق
he has indeed been true to God in his striving.
God has indeed proven true in His endeavor
And one false in striving is not like the sincere.
While the false endeavor is not like the true
يرىhe sees أنّthat منجاتهhis salvation فيin الخلوصsincerity
يرى أنّ منجاته في الخلوص
فيعدلso he turns away عنfrom سننِthe path of الماذقِthe dissembler
فيعدل عن سننِ الماذقِ
He sees that his salvation lies in sincerity,
He sees his salvation in seclusion
so he turns away from the dissembler’s path.
So he turns away from the ways of the taster
ومنand whoever رحمshows mercy to الخلقcreation لمdoes not تعدهُpass him by
ومن رحم الخلق لم تعدهُ
علىin حالةٍany circumstance رحمةُthe mercy of الخالقِthe Creator
على حالةٍ رحمةُ الخالقِ
And whoever shows mercy to creation will not be passed over,
And he whom the mercy of people did not suffice
in any circumstance, by the Creator’s mercy.
How can the mercy of the Creator suffice him?
ألاtake heed اصمثتbe silent (unclear spelling) عنfrom النطقspeaking بالترّwith idle— (word fragment)
ألا اصمثت عن النطق بالترّ
هات—talk (word continuation) ونهنهand restrain بهاby it مقولthe tongue of الناطقthe speaker
هات ونهنه بها مقول الناطق
Take heed: be silent; refrain from speaking idle—
Oh, be silent about speaking nonsense
—talk, and thereby restrain the speaker’s tongue.
And restrain it with what the speaker says
لإخفاقbecause of the failure of مسعاكyour endeavor عشlive واجماًdowncast
لإخفاق مسعاك عش واجماً
بقلبwith a heart علىover فوتهِits loss خافقfluttering
بقلب على فوتهِ خافق
Because your endeavor has failed, live downcast,
Due to the failure of your hearing, live quietly
with a heart fluttering over its loss.
With a heart anxious about missing out
وبتand spend the night فيin الدجىthe darkness شاكياcomplaining باكياًweeping
وبت في الدجى شاكيا باكياً
علىover عملٍa deed ليسnot بالنافقat all acceptable
على عملٍ ليس بالنافق
And spend the night in darkness, complaining and weeping,
And spend the night weeping and crying
over a deed that finds no acceptance.
Over deeds that are not pretentious
