إيّاك والاسفاف للأطماع
قناعةُcontentment المرءof a person منa form of الإقناعpersuasion
قناعةُ المرء من الإقناع
Beware of stooping to greed.
Beware of greed and avarice
A person's contentment lends credence
One's contentment comes from persuasion
فيconcerning ماwhat ادّعىhe claimed منof كرمnobility الطّباعof character
في ما ادّعى من كرم الطّباع
وعافand he disdained منof بذلةthe humiliation الانتجاعof seeking favors
وعاف من بذلة الانتجاع
to his claim of noble character
In what he claims of noble disposition
and his disdain for the humiliation of seeking favors.
And abstains from begging and importunity
تاللّهby God ماnot الإصرارpersistence كالإقلاعlike renunciation
تاللّه ما الإصرار كالإقلاع
انخفضlies low الوهدthe hollow عنbelow اليفاعthe high ground
انخفض الوهد عن اليفاع
By God, persistence is not like renunciation.
By Allah, persistence is not like desisting
The hollow lies below the high ground.
The torrent subsided from the mountain peak
عاريةُthe loan العمرof life إلىtoward ارتجاعreclamation
عاريةُ العمر إلى ارتجاع
وصلةthe bond الحبلof the cord إلىtoward انقطاعseverance
وصلة الحبل إلى انقطاع
The loan of life is destined to be reclaimed.
The lifetime is bare unto death
The cord's bond is destined to be severed.
The rope's connection unto severance
واهاًalas لأسماعfor ears بلاwithout استماعlistening
واهاً لأسماع بلا استماع
وأنفسٍand souls ترضىare content بالانخداعwith being deceived
وأنفسٍ ترضى بالانخداع
Alas for ears that do not listen,
Woe to the ears without hearing
and souls content to be deceived.
And souls content with deception
دعleave الوفاfidelity وجدّand be earnest فيin الزماعfirm resolve
دع الوفا وجدّ في الزماع
إنّindeed الفطامweaning عقبَafter الرضاعsuckling
إنّ الفطام عقبَ الرضاع
Leave fidelity behind, and be earnest in your resolve.
Leave loyalty and exert yourself in the times
Indeed, weaning follows suckling.
Indeed weaning comes after suckling
