He whose signs prove true has decreed concerning your most pleasing rule,

That you shall possess the world and inherit the earth.

And set water and soil on their course to bring you good fortune:

Yours, then, to spread out those two expanses or gather them in.

Good fortune fights for you while the army rests,

And toil wears down your enemies while the sword remains undrawn.

Your dominion ceaselessly conquers what is near

And what is far, ranging its length and breadth for you.

As though the horizons had vowed to dedicate themselves

To you, each following another in fulfillment.

Ifriqiya obeyed you, and you shielded her from

Rebels massed to destroy her with crushing force.

She had been thickets full of enemies, but you remade her

Gardens, with fresh blossom fluttering in their midst.

And when you answered al-Nasiriyya as her champion,

And crossed her desert at a gallop toward al-Batha,

Tlemcen called you, and you answered her voice,

As her protector, while tyranny's fang bit her again and again.

You clothed her, while she was obedient, in your bounty:

A fresh robe, neither threadbare nor wash-worn.

But when she raced full rein into treachery

And dragged harm and crushing ruin into her quarters,

You appeared against her, filling the vast open plain

With battalions—how fierce in defense, how well-pleasing!

And led against her every dauntless commander

To seize her treasures and force open her locks.

Nor does her battle-day bring respite from your conquests—

How could it, when their very land is stricken with trembling?

You overran her protected domain in mastery, then protected it,

Leaving her love of treachery changed to hatred in her breast.

You left an army of terror among her sister cities,

Swooping down to make their beds restless.

The regions have not rested since they trembled at it,

Nor have eyes slept since it robbed them of slumber.

You penetrated deep into them, and their governors guarded themselves against you

Through submission, seeking to ward off demolition and crushing ruin.

Never was your highness appealed to for pardon and favor,

However grave the offense, without rising fully to the call.

Such are the Hafsid nobles: when they have power, they pardon.

No terror goes to extremes, nor is an excuse exacted.

Ibn Khalas was saved by sincerity; had he persisted

In its opposite, his host would have been shattered and dispersed.

And welcome to the multitude of Ceuta's people,

For a pledge of good pleasure whose binding they deemed a duty.

Good fortunes watched over them in it, and they secured

Elevation of their standing and ease in their life.

Beyond your aid, there dawned on them what turned

Their empty tracts full and their needy well-nourished.

And earlier al-Andalus had asked you for rain, and did not

Find your overflowing bounty dwindled or merely trickling.

Through the conquest of Ribat al-Fath, hopes are secured,

And he who spends the night stoking battle's fire attains them.

How fitting for Fez to return to her good sense,

Now that Marrakesh has thoroughly washed her error away.

    فَلَوْ سَنِيَتْ أَغْرَاضُهَا شَدَّتِ الغُرْضَا

    Indeed, among her concerns is war against her Romans;

Were her aims made attainable, she would tighten the saddle-girths.

We seem already to see her upheld by resolves,

Sound resolves of followers sick with longing.

Their utmost is to confine their gaze and hearts

To embers fanned to flame, or tears pouring forth.

So from there they hailed you as caliph, since

The severing of dissent's roots had left them no pulse.

The cities rallied to your cause and thrust

Your enemies from their lofty pulpits, burning with anguish.

And where do all the orders of creation stand

Beside the most pleasing ruler, or the keenest sword—

Beside him who plunges into battle to uphold guidance,

With blows and thrusts, no mere scratches or shallow pricks?

Peerless in merit among the sons of Unity, as though

His mastery in learning were his purity in honor.

    فَلا غَرْوَ أنْ يَسْتَخْلِصَ الكَرَمَ المَحْضَا

    Indeed, Yahya is the purest among the imams;

No wonder he makes unalloyed generosity his own.

Blessed in binding and unbinding, sustained by aid,

Whether he undertakes to bind or undertakes to undo.

He pours bounty upon lords with fearless abandon,

And strikes at kings with a fearless, savage bite.

    وَإنْ غاضَ صَرْفُ الدَّهْرِ مُعْتَدِياً أَغْضَى

    Whenever rainfall grows scant, his fingers pour in torrents;

And if time's vicissitudes unjustly drain him, he turns a blind eye.

Never does calamity's face grow black but he rises to meet it,

To brighten it, open-browed and shining white.

What honor for the captive who shelters at his pillar!

And what wealth for the suppliant who reaches his bounty!

Poetry has sung of his virtues,

But they stand far beyond it, too great for verse to do them justice.
