After you, Eid returns bringing no hopes,
O absent one, yet seemingly present.

It came, our fellowship scattered; then there met
Hope and despair, one driving the other away.

It reveals its inner feelings through a frowning face,
From its grief, as though it were bereft of you.

And we well remember its forenoon, its early glow delightful,
And the world seeming a full-hipped maiden with budding breasts.

How greatly the shades of hope have dwindled—
Once serene—and the haunts of bliss lie deserted.

The ties between us have been severed; so the
Pens are mute, and the winds lie still.

On its morning my eyes poured tears over you,
And the rainclouds' lavish tears streamed down that day.

للّهِto God, in admiration مِنْهُfrom it عَلَىin البُكَاءweeping مُسَاعِدa helper
Though they kept me sleepless, its sympathy pleased me:
God be praised for such a companion in weeping!
كَمْhow often كُنْتُI was فيon أمْثَالِهdays like it بكَwith you رَاغِباًeager

How eager I was on days like this, with you!
Now, without you, one like me has no desire for it.
أوْرَثتَنيyou bequeathed me دَنَفاًa wasting sickness أقَامَthat stayed لِرِحْلَةٍbecause of a journey

You left me a wasting sickness that lingers because of a journey
You resolved upon—as though it were my sickbed visitor.

What I had always feared would happen has happened;
And when it grieves me, the envier rejoices.

O one alone, after whom I am all grief,
Indeed, I grieve over the loss of your presence.

If time's vicissitudes have driven us apart,
Unjustly, then my heart keeps joy at a distance.

How clear the two opposites in my state, which
Has changed: grief endures, while patience is spent.
لمdid not تَضمَنِguarantee البقياsurvival لأنسيfor my solace وَحشَتيmy loneliness

My loneliness did not ensure that my solace would survive;
And behold, the one I love for my solace has perished.
