May goodness be yours—let me enjoy a garden’s gillyflower,

whose breaths waft at the hour of sleep.

Does not the man of letters among blossoms make his night

into day, so his scent grows strong and sweet beneath it?

And at daybreak he folds away his fragrance’s unfurled scroll,

as a beloved departed from the lover’s dwelling.

I am enamored of him through a kinship in letters,

and it is no wonder that one man of letters loves another.
