أَيَاO بُشْرَايَmy glad tidings قَدْalready وَضَحَbecame clear القَبولُacceptance
وَصَحَّand came true مِنَfrom الرِّضَىfavor أمَلٌhope وسُولُand desire
O my glad tidings! Acceptance is now clear.
And hope and desire for favor have come true.
وَشَفَّعَand accepted the intercession of نَجْلَهُhis son الأزكَىthe most virtuous إمَامٌan imam
لِمَنْto one who صُرِمَتْwere severed وسائِلُهُhis means of access وَصُولُgenerous
And an imam accepted his most virtuous son's intercession,
generous to one whose means of access had been severed.
فَمَاso not لِسِوَاهُمَاfor anyone besides those two للصَّفْحِfor pardon عَنِّيconcerning me
يَدٌa hand عُلْياlofty ولاnor مَنٌّa favor جَزِيلُbountiful
So none but those two, in pardoning me,
can claim a noble hand or a bounteous favor.
أقَالَنِيَpardoned me الخَلِيفَةُthe caliph مِنْfrom عِثَارِيmy stumbling
فَمَاذَاso what فيabout إِقَالَتِهِhis pardon أقُولُshall I say
The caliph pardoned me for my stumbling;
what, then, can I say of his pardon?
وَقَدْand indeed قَبُحَتْturned ugly مُمَالأَةُcollusion الليَاليthe nights
عَلَيَّagainst me وَرَأْيُهُand his judgment الْحَسَنُgood الجَمِيلُgracious
And the nights' collusion had turned ugly
against me, yet his judgment was good and gracious.
أَنَاI العَبْدُthe servant الشَّكُورُdeeply grateful لِمَاfor what حَبَتْنِيbestowed on me
بِهِwith it عَلْيَاهُhis eminence والمَجْدُand the glory الأَثيلُdeep-rooted
I am the servant grateful for what was bestowed on me
by his eminence and deep-rooted glory.
وإِخْلاصِيand my sincerity بهِof it المَوْلىthe lord عَليمٌwell aware
وإنْand although لَمْdid not يَأتِcommit إِجْرَاميmy offense جَهُولُan ignorant man
And my lord knows my sincerity,
though my offense was not an ignorant man's doing.
أَذوبُI melt إِذاwhen أُحَجَّبُI am barred عَنْهُfrom him شَوْقاًwith longing
فَكَيْفَso how بِهِof it إِذاwhen أَزِفَdraws near الرَّحيلُdeparture
I melt with longing when I am kept from him;
what, then, of that longing when departure draws near?
