وَقَالواand they said ألفْتَyou grew accustomed to الكَرَىsleep نُطْفَةًa drop
وَقَالوا ألفْتَ الكَرَى نُطْفَةً
وَبتَّand you spent the night عَلَىin ظَمَإٍthirst لِلكَرَىfor sleep
وَبتَّ عَلَى ظَمَإٍ لِلكَرَى
And they said, “You have grown used to a mere drop of sleep,
They said you met misfortune as a drop
and spent the night thirsting for sleep.”
And persisted thirsting after misfortune
فَقُلتُso I said الهَوَىlove ضَافَنِيcame to me as a guest طَاوِياًtraversing
فَقُلتُ الهَوَى ضَافَنِي طَاوِياً
إِليَّtoward me المَراحِلَthe journey’s stages يَشْكُوcomplaining of السُّرَىnight travel
إِليَّ المَراحِلَ يَشْكُو السُّرَى
So I said, “Love came to me as a guest, traversing
I said: passion laid me low
the stages toward me, complaining of travel by night.
To me the stages complain of the secret
فَبَوَّأتُهso I lodged him مُقلَتِيmy eye مَنزِلاًas a dwelling
فَبَوَّأتُه مُقلَتِي مَنزِلاً
وَقَدَّمتُand I offered نَوْمِيmy sleep إِلَيهِto him قِرَىa guest’s fare
وَقَدَّمتُ نَوْمِي إِلَيهِ قِرَى
So I made my eye his lodging,
So I established it in the corner of my eye
and offered him my sleep as a guest’s fare.”
And offered it my sleep as hospitality
