وكَيْفَ يَقَرّ صَبّ مُسْتهامٌ

وكَيْفَ يَقَرّ صَبّ مُسْتهامٌ

دَنَا بَعْدَ النزوحِ مِنَ القرارِ

دَنَا بَعْدَ النزوحِ مِنَ القرارِ

And how can a lovelorn, love-bewildered man find rest,

How can a passionate lover find rest

Who, after being far away, has drawn near the dwelling?

After moving from stability?

ضَميري واجدٌ بهَوى المصَلَّى

ضَميري واجدٌ بهَوى المصَلَّى

كوجد أخي قُشير بالضِّمارِ

كوجد أخي قُشير بالضِّمارِ

My heart aches with love for al-Muṣallā,

My heart is filled with love for the worshipper

Like the man of Qushayr’s longing for al-Ḍimār,

Like my brother's love for his veil

لآصالٍ بهِ حسنت وَطَابَت

لآصالٍ بهِ حسنت وَطَابَت

كَما حدّثْتَ عَنْ نوْر العَرارِ

كَما حدّثْتَ عَنْ نوْر العَرارِ

For late afternoons there, lovely and sweet,

With it I have beautified virtuous deeds

Just as you spoke of the ʿarār blossoms.

As you told of the light of the Bride

وما جارَ الغَرامُ عليَّ حتَّى

وما جارَ الغَرامُ عليَّ حتَّى

تأكّد بَيْننا سَبَبُ الجِوارِ

تأكّد بَيْننا سَبَبُ الجِوارِ

And passion did not oppress me until

And passion did not afflict me

The bond of nearness between us grew firm.

Until our neighborhood was affirmed

وأبرَحُ ما يكون الشوق يَوْماً

وأبرَحُ ما يكون الشوق يَوْماً

إذا دَنَت الدّيار منَ الدّيارِ

إذا دَنَت الدّيار منَ الدّيارِ

And longing is never more agonizing

And I do not stop what the longing will be one day

Than when dwellings draw near to dwellings.
