Who can give me the patience of one free of care, while my heart is grief-stricken,

Longing for that beguiling, open brow and the gap between your teeth?

O mistress of the heart, how fares the heart—how fares it

With your two terrors, coyness and coquetry?

As though your eyes were set in the two cutting edges

Of the keenest of swords, intended for the slaughter of souls.

I say to sleep, the late-night talkers already asleep,

While I toss restlessly, captive-hearted and distraught:

“For sleeplessness, above my eyelids, never leaving them,

Stands a sentry; so if you can enter, enter.”
