    The reproacher gained sway over his ears,

    then spoke—and you know what he says.

    وَهل يَسلو بُثيْنَتَهُ جَميلُ

    And he supposed I would put aside my love for her;

    but can Jamil ever cease loving his Buthayna?

    God forbid that I believe a slanderer

    who falsely reports that I am fickle.

    And how could I, when you are my hope and wish?

    And hope and desire for you are enough for me.

    Never, when the forenoon rose high, did my heart yearn

    for anyone but you, nor when the late afternoon waned.

    A henna-dyed hand offers me love,

    and a kohl-lined eye clothes me in wasting sickness.

    What a heart, then, possessed by youthful dalliance,

    and what a body, courted by wasting thinness!

    فذاتُ الخالِ مَبْسِمُها مُخِيلُ

    I shall secure from her the quenching of my burning thirst;

    for the beauty with the mole has a smiling mouth that promises rain.

    And if I speak delicately of a morning draught from it,

    then her saliva is well-aged wine.

    سَأُمْضيهِ وإنْ أنِفَ القَبيلُ

    And I am resolved to kiss her mouth;

    I shall carry it out, even if the clan takes offense.

    And she said, “Whom have I slain? Tell me.”

    May I be your ransom, O slayer—I am the slain.

    To whom shall I complain of my anguish, and who is there

    to coax you, when the messenger has been barred?

    And before your tents, which are my hopes,

    blades from your eyelids fiercely charge.

    In God's sight is what my eye endured

    the morning those laden camels departed.

    فليْسَ إلى وِصالِكُمُ وُصولُ

    You forsook me, then resolved on separation;

    so reunion with you is beyond reach.

    It was never in my reckoning that you would act unjustly

    as you have against me, and that you would turn away.

    You have indeed delighted in wronging me; so my death

    because of you is inevitable, and my life impossible.
