وحَمَامَةٍand a dove ناحَتْlamented فَنُحْتُso I lamented إِزاءَهاbeside her
فَلَوِso if اسْتَمَعْتَyou listened لَقُلْتَyou would have said هَذاthis المأْتَمُthe mourning gathering
And a dove lamented, so I lamented beside her;
And a dove lamented, so I lamented beside her.
had you listened, you would have said, “This is a mourning assembly.”
Had you listened, you would have said, “This is a mourning gathering.”
أَبْكِيI weep وتَبْكِيand she weeps غَيرَexcept أنِّيthat I مُعْرِبٌspeaking plainly
عَمَّاof what أُكِنُّI conceal مِنَof الغَرَامpassionate love وتُعْجِمُand she is inarticulate
I weep and she weeps—yet I can make plain
I weep, and she weeps, but I speak plainly
the passion I conceal, while she remains inarticulate.
of the passion I conceal, while she is inarticulate.
وأرَدِّدُand I repeat الزَّفَرَاتِthe sighs أثْنَاءَduring البُكَاweeping
وَتَظَلُّand she continues فَوْقَabove أَراكِهاher arak tree تَتَرَنَّمُwarbling
I repeat my deep sighs amid the weeping,
And I sigh again and again as I weep,
while she, atop her arak tree, keeps warbling.
and she keeps warbling atop her arak tree.
فَإِذاso when أصَاخَhe listens intently لِشَدْوِهاto her song وتَأَوُّهيand my moaning
وَاعٍa discerning listener يَقُولُhe says خَلِيَّةٌfree of love ومُتَيَّمُand enslaved by love
And when a discerning listener hearkens to her song and my moaning,
So when her song and my moaning are heard attentively,
he says: “One is free of passion; the other, love-enslaved.”
a discerning listener says, “She is heart-free, and he is love-enslaved.”
