A greeting, as when spring smiles to reveal roses,

And the seal of musk and rose-hued ambergris is broken,

And the one you love visits you after estrangement,

Without mention of a meeting or a promise.

I reserve it for the dwelling of Abu al-Hasan, for whom

The heart conceals twice the love it reveals:

A greeting from one whose heart is filled with remembrance of him,

In every circumstance, whether near or far,

Steadfast in honoring the pledges of old,

When not every close friend keeps faith with the pledge.
