حتّامhow long نلعبwe play ذاهلاًheedlessly وتخوضand you plunge in
حتّام نلعب ذاهلاً وتخوض
O you beguiled by the smiling enticements of hope,
O you beguiled by vanishing hopes,
how long shall we trifle while you, heedless, plunge on?
how long shall we play heedlessly, while you plunge in?
لاdo not تكذبنّever lie فكلّfor all ماwhat تبديyou reveal وماand what
لا تكذبنّ فكلّ ما تبدي وما
تخفيyou conceal إذاwhen عرضis brought forth الورىhumankind معروضlaid bare
تخفي إذا عرض الورى معروض
Never lie: everything you reveal and everything you

ولربand many a مقبولaccepted المساعيthe endeavors فيin الدناthis world

Many a man whose endeavors are accepted in this world—
And many a man whose efforts are accepted in this world
his endeavor, on the day of his reckoning, will be rejected.
will have his striving rejected on the day of his reckoning.
للّهto God درذexcellence (apparent typo) التائبينthe repentant فإنّهمfor they
للّه درذ التائبين فإنّهم
نهضواthey rose وماand no للمذنبينfor sinners نهوضrising
نهضوا وما للمذنبين نهوض
How admirable are the penitent! For they

have risen, while sinners have no rising.

How vast the distance between one who, through soaring ambition, fills his heart
How vast the gulf between one filling his heart with soaring
with hope, and one who, fearful, keeps his gaze lowered;
hope and one in awe, whose gaze is lowered,
وإلىand toward التفكّرreflection فيon المآلthe final end فروعهُhis branches (unclear in context)
وإلى التفكّر في المآل فروعهُ
ذوone possessed of روعَةٍdread وبنانهُand his fingertips معضوضbitten
ذو روعَةٍ وبنانهُ معضوض
and among whose duties is reflection on the final end,
and whose recourse is reflection on the final end [conjectural reading],
possessed by dread, his fingertips bitten.

قلsay للذّينto those who تظاهرواmade a show بظهورهمof their prominence
قل للذّين تظاهروا بظهورهم

سيطول في بطن التراب غموضُ
Say to those who flaunt their prominence:

Long will their obscurity last in the belly of the earth.

وهناكand there يستوليholds sway الدثورdecay ويستويand stand equal
وهناك يستولي الدثور ويستوي
فيin الرتبةrank المرفوعthe exalted والمخفوضand the lowly
في الرتبة المرفوع والمخفوض
There decay takes dominion, and equal become
And there decay holds sway, and equal stand
in rank the exalted and the abased.
