فيin قَصْدِpursuit of غَايَاتيmy aims وفِيand in اسْتِقْبالِthe future
Glad tidings for me! This is the beginning of good fortune
My glad tidings, this is the start of my determination
in pursuing my aims and in what lies ahead.
In pursuit of my goals and in anticipation
وَافَانِيَcame to me الزَّمَنُTime المُسِيءُill-treating مُحَسِّناًmaking fair

Cruel Time came to me, making fair
And time, though once unkind, came to me amended
its traces through gracious treatment.
Its traces equivalent to summation
وَذَمَمْتُand I condemned تَرْحَالاًjourneying وَحِلاًand staying قَبْلَهاbefore it
فَحَمِدْتُso I praised عُقْبَىthe outcome الحِلِّstaying والتَّرْحالِand journeying
And I had condemned journeying and staying before then,
I had wandered many lands prior to this
so I praised the outcome of staying and journeying.
So I praised the outcome of roaming and dwelling
وَعَزِزْتُand I gained honor بَعْدَafter الهوْنِabasement والإِذْلالِand humiliation
وأَمِنْتُand I became safe بَعْدَafter الرَّوْعِterror والأَوْجالِand fears
And I gained honor after abasement and humiliation,
And became mighty after weakness and humiliation
and found safety after terror and fears.
And felt secure after fear and hardship
وَثَوَيْتُand I dwelt فيin خَفْضٍease وفِيand in دَعَةٍrepose بِماin return for what
كابَدْتُI endured مِنْof شَظَفٍhardship وَمِنْand of زِلزالِupheaval
And I dwelt in ease and repose, in return for
And I flourished in humility and comfort despite
the hardship and upheaval I had endured.
The desolation and tremors I had endured
وَلَقيتُand I encountered ماwhat لاnot أستَقِلُّI can undertake alone بِوَصفِهِto describe it
وَإِنِeven if ادَّعيتI claimed مزِيَّةَthe distinction of استِقلالِself-sufficiency
And I encountered what I cannot adequately describe,
And I experienced what I cannot aptly describe
even if I claim the distinction of self-sufficiency.
Though I claimed the merit of independence
وكَفاكَand it suffices you أنَّthat الرّومَthe Romans كانَتْwere جِيرَتيmy neighbors

And it is enough for you that the Romans were my neighbors,
It is enough that Rome was once my neighbor
through my times' injustice and my altered fortunes.
From the injustice of my fate and trials
كُنْتُI was الطَّلِيقَfree هُنَاكَthere لَكِنْbut لَمْnot أزَلْcease

I was free there, yet never ceased to be
I was free there but never stopped
in chains from the anguish of regret.
Feeling fettered by intense regrets
أَبْكِيI weep عَلىover اسْتِئْصالِthe annihilation of مَنْthose whom خَلَّفْتُهُI left behind

I weep over the annihilation of those I left behind,
I weep for those I left behind
and prolong my weeping before dawn and in the late afternoons.
And spend the nights in prayers and worries
حَتَّىuntil إذَاwhen فَارَقْتُI left أرْضَهُمُtheir land التِيwhich

Until I left their land which
had been a second fetter added to my own,
Had become a second home to me

and longing, melting my ribs, summoned me
And longing, melting my essence, called me
to my homes, so I and my saddlecloths answered it,
Back home, so I answered despite my dignity

stumbling Fortune brought me face to face with a band
But on my return hardship made me stumble upon
that carried off my wealth to make my fate turn ill.
A gang that robbed me, hoping to ruin me

So my soul resumed, by decree of its misery,
So my soul resumed, judging its misfortune,
plunging into terror upon terror.
A plunge into new horrors and ordeals

I remained in a ruinous vision of them
I remain lost in pleasing fantasies
until I came to leave affliction behind,
Until I become detached from sorrows

A gallant man: toward his dwelling wishes race,
One who meets the lightning of his forehead in crisis
and upon his eminence hopes throng.
Is enriched by the pouring of his copious rains
مَنْwhoever شَامَwatched بَرْقَthe lightning of جَبِينِهِhis brow فيin أزْمَةٍhardship

Whoever watched the lightning of his brow in hardship
He inherited leadership from his father and grandfather
grew rich through the pouring rain of his generosity.
The pure of word and deed

And he accomplished what made prosperous the inheritance he gained
pure in words and deeds.
So the attainment of perfection did not fatigue him

by inheritance; attaining perfection did not weary him.

He is the world's unique man; whoever does not approve of him,
Alas, none like him exists in the universe
let him bring his like in this world.

They maintained for him a nobility ever flourishing
and Dulayyim, peerless in generosity,
Transcending eras and circumstances

left him honor that grows ever renewed,
Whoever wishes to exceed in praising him, let him do so
standing proud beside him through every change of circumstance.
Without blame for lavish praise

Whoever wishes for extravagance in praise, let him
When I kissed his hand and saw him
be extravagant in praising him, without blame.
I paid no mind to life or the new moon
لَمَّاwhen لَثَمْتُI kissed يَمِينَهhis right hand ورَأيْتُهand I saw him
لَمْnot أَلْتَفِتْI paid heed لحَياًto rain ولاnor لِهِلالِto a crescent moon
When I kissed his right hand and saw him,
Say to time, for you have stood at his door
I paid no heed to rain or to a crescent moon.
And joined the peers and equivalents
قُلْsay للزَّمَانِto Time وقَدand already مَثَلْتَyou stood ببَابِهِat his door
فَلَحِقْتَso you caught up بِالنُّظَرَاءِwith peers والأَمْثَالِand equals
Say to Time, now that you have stood at his door
Indeed, the son of Eesa whom you knew for his beaming light
and caught up with peers and equals:
And generosity in calamity and tribulation
إنَّindeed ابْنَson of عِيسَىIsa مَنْthe one whose عَلِمْتَyou knew مَضَاءهُhis resolve

Indeed, Ibn Isa is the one whose resolve you know,
His justice with me suffices for your tyranny
and whose generosity in terror and drought you know.
For what you stole from me by extermination
يَكْفيكَsuffices you جَورَكَyour tyranny عدْلُهُhis justice بِيَtoward me عادِلاًturning aside

His justice toward me suffices against your tyranny, turning me aside
He remains the repeller of every incident and misfortune
from the annihilation you intended.
And protector of those rendered without protector

May he always ward off every calamity that befalls,
