تقوم بأُنْس النّفس في وَحشة الدُّجى
And a yellow one, in the lover’s hue and plight,
Yellow in the color of the lover and his state
She comforts the soul in the loneliness of night.
It stands with the intimacy of the soul in the desolation of darkness

فلا فَرْقَ إلا أنّها تَحْمَد الشّجا
When her flames blaze up, her tears pour down;
When its fires blaze, its tears flow
So there is no difference, save that she praises sorrow.
So there is no difference except that it praises the night

ورُبّ نَعيمٍ من عذابٍ تَنَتّجا
We deliberately torment her so she may gladden souls;
We torture it intentionally so that souls enjoy
And many a delight has been born of torment.
And much pleasure comes from torment that emerges

فأطفأَها الإصْباحُ حِينَ تبلّجا
The forenoon sun, her rival wife, harmed her;
The morning sun harmed it
So daybreak extinguished her when it shone forth.
So the dawn extinguished it when it shone
