Who is the king saluted in the pavilion,

Whose splendor stands above the seven layered heavens?

The keen blades gain might in his palm,

And the lasting rains shine with his name.

Auspicious stars race toward his favor,

Leading the way with lightning and with al-Buraq.

When his battalions advance by day,

You see night's canopy stretched wide.

For they consist of roused, ravening lions

Upon sleek, finely formed, noble steeds.

As though, because of them, the earth lay amid seas

Surging in upheaval and crashing together.

They surge with tents and buildings,

And overflow with full-grown steeds and she-camels.

The wind tires short of their utmost reach,

As slender-waisted women tire of bearing a girdle.

The horses lead the way, white-blazed and unmarked,

Lean, for pursuit and for racing.

Swift steeds, like tawny gazelles, lift

Their necks where no climber can ascend.

And perceive things hidden from them

With delicate ears they prick up.

Their master's tethered mounts while night is dark,

And their people's refuge when death drives on.

The storm winds long to catch up with them,

But their noble breeding will not let them be overtaken.

When they appear with adorned necks,

They draw eyes away from the gardens.

And there, the reek of iron yields a fragrance

That nostrils hasten to breathe in.

    Battalions in which banners flutter,

Just as the heart quails at parting.

    Verdant, like leafy groves,

A guardian has shielded them from drought's drying.

Within them, pools of keen swords and coats of mail

    Shimmer, flowing and driven onward.

Death and hopes have set out

Toward two factions, of opposition and accord.

The former does battle in al-Andalus,

And the latter hovers over Iraq.

By God's command, King Yahya arose,

Though bands of hypocrisy had held him back.

Those, then, are faith's bonds growing firm,

And that is guidance's radiance gleaming.

A prince who is all knowledge and forbearance,

And beneficence and justice in harmony.

Thus, through virtues blessed in their aims,

    And ambitions reaching distant heights,

The kings of mankind fall short of him.

And how far pure water lies from bitter brine!

Upon the nights, though they are dark, shines

    His cheerful countenance, heralding release.

That none shall cleave his dust has been decreed

By his supporter against the people of discord.

I marvel at his white blades, their flats rusting,

As though they had not been slaked with spilled gore,

    Nor dyed with hard hearts

That flow upon their slender cutting edges.

    أجَابَتْ في ابْتِداء واسْتِباقِ

    God's trustee has granted them conquest upon conquest;

They answered, taking the lead and racing ahead.

And remain for the faith, radiant in ascent,

    And for the world, with its collarbones adorned;

And may the believers' ranks come together,

And the unbelievers' ranks fall apart.

    You rose to meet hopes,

So glad tidings to hopes at the meeting!

And God's support is manifest upon you,

And God's kindness toward you endures.

So halt and march with triumph at your bidding,

And return and depart toward victory coming to meet you.

You bestowed favor on the far and near,

And gave freely, easing the tightness of the noose.

    And lavished gifts and favors,

And filled the buckets to their crossbars.

I consented to farewell, which had called me,

Amid ardent attachment, anguish, and longing.

And the seat of rule is not a place for which I would not

Spend the night, at parting from it, with tear-soaked eyes.

    فَكَيْفَ أعيبُ مِلْكِي بالإباقِ

    And I had come to it an outright slave;

How, then, can I blemish my bondage by absconding?

Indeed, patience was overburdened and could not bear it—

A departure I do not deem bearable.

So if I have accompanied a body at liberty,

I have indeed left behind a heart in bonds,

    Where valor's lance-tips are brandished,

And where generosity is honey-sweet to taste.

For wherever I am sent, eastward

And westward, aboard ships or among traveling companies,

From its bounty come my pride and affiliation,

And serving it is my ascent and attachment.
