It gladdens my eye that my heart has never rested,
My eyes acknowledge that my heart has never settled
yearning for one whose phantom, if it came by night, would bring joy.
On anyone whose specter, had it passed by, would be my secret
قُصارَايَmy utmost قَصْرُconfining النفسِthe soul فيهاconcerning her عَلىto الهَوىlove
هَواناًin abasement وقَتلُand killing الصّبرِpatience فيin إثرِهاher wake صَبراwhile held captive
My utmost is to confine my soul to love for her,
My shortcomings stem from my soul's weakness for love
in abasement, and to slay patience as a captive in her wake.
And the killing of my patience in pursuit of it as patience
وَقَوْليand my saying عَلىat قُرْبِthe nearness of المَزارِthe place of visitation وبُعْدِهand its distance
سَلامٌpeace وإنeven if حيّيْتُI greeted منْof ربعِهاher dwelling قَفراa wasteland
And my words, whether the place of visitation is near or far,
Whether near or far from her burial place
are "Peace," even if I greet a waste in her dwelling.
My words are "Peace," though I greet barren quarters from her abode
عَفَاهُeffaced it وَماand did not أَعْفاهُspare it إزْماعُهاher resolve for النّوىdeparture

فأصبَحَso it became إِلاexcept منfor طَوافيmy circling بِهاaround it صِفْراempty
Her resolve to depart effaced it and did not spare it;
It undid him, and he did not undo it, her taking the spears as toys
so it stood empty, save for my circling around it.
So he wakes up accompanied only by those who circle about her as if yellow

I remember it dewy with bliss and freshness,
My promise to her grows bliss and vitality
giving fragrance to the east wind and full cheer to the forenoon.
So the zephyr spreads blossoms and the prime brings good news

Was it not the Kaaba of hopes' pilgrimage,
Was she not like the Kaaba to yearning hopes
and, within its enclosure, a sanctuary for the fearful?
And did the visitor not hold her as a precious stone held in his lap?

Its wall deserves my kisses and reverent touch,
Her wall deserves my kissing and caressing
and its two corners, whether love deems it proper or improper.
And I reckoned her pillar to be what love counts as familiar or denied
فَلاso no عيدَfeast مَاas long as لمnot تُسعِدُنيyou gladden me بعَوْدَةٍwith a return

There is no feast unless you gladden me with a return;
So my holiday lacks felicity unless she makes me happy by returning
and how can one who has sought the grave make for the palace?
And how can he who heads to the grave frequent the palace?
فَتَاةٌa maiden أفَاتَتْهَاtook her away الليالِيthe nights غَوادِراًtreacherous

A maiden whom the treacherous nights took away,
A girl the nights stole away, treasure-laden
and after her they left me enamored and enthralled.
And after her loss, they left me lovesick and lovelorn
أُسِرُّI conceal هَواهاlove for her ثُمَّthen أَجْهَرُI speak openly مُفْصِحاًplainly

I conceal my love for her, then speak openly and plainly
I conceal her love then disclose it clearly
of it; love is what pervades secrecy and openness.
For the secret and open both nurtured passion for her

She was of the dun gazelles, but her bower lies in the dust;
Of pale sands but that in the pale sands lie her treasures
alas for death! How often I lament the dun gazelles and the pale gazelle!
So oh, how I lament the pale sands and the sand dunes!

When her glances add enchantment to their languor,
When her glances unleash magic, beguiling minds
minds go astray in it, so give up hope of mending.
Only accepting destiny can treat that which has befallen
سَلاهَاask her, you two وقَلبيand my heart ماhas not سَلاهَاforgotten her بِحالَةٍin any state

Ask her, you two—my heart has never forgotten her in any state,
My heart saluted her but her state never gave salutations in return
faithful in its adornment—why she chose treachery.
Showing loyalty for her preference of another over me
جَرَتْpassed بارِحاتُthe ill-omened crossers of الطَّيْرbirds لاnot سانِحاتُهاtheir auspicious crossers

The ill-omened birds passed, not the auspicious ones,
Some whims for her in my heart deterred me
with what brought, concerning her, all the anguish it brought.
And I forgot Eid al-Adha as I recalled Eid al-Fitr
تَعَهّدَهاtended her كَرُّthe return of الجَدِيدَيْنِday and night بالبِلَىwith decay

Returning day and night tended her with decay;
Inside me the two opposites meet, water and kindling
oh, the anguish of my love-stricken soul whenever they return!
So my hot liver answers my moist eyelids' pouring

We enjoyed bliss for a moment, while the two nocked for us
I decided against visiting her for a time
arrows that struck us with what broke our backs.
Just as she decided for separation what had endeared visiting

Her return was only for departure;
Is life anything but conversing with a lovely gazelle
such is a stay, O people: it does not postpone desolation.
Whose glance bewitches the gazelle and the full moon?

Mention of her guarantees my thanks, as though
To reside with her, plucking fruits of wishes
news of her were passed around as wine to the yearning lover.
To a stillness like ashes that stirs no thoughts
ومِنand from سَدَرٍbewilderment أضْلَلْتُI lost فِيهاconcerning her مَرَاشِديmy guides

In bewilderment I lost my guides concerning her;
I overpowered her rejections with my most powerful
I question the wild lote and lote trees about her companions.
So at dawn I possess of her nothing but memories
وأَذكُرُand I recall بالرَّوْضِin the garden الأرِيضِlush وَماand what حَوَىit held

In the lush garden and all it holds I recall
And if the impossible could be redone to restore her
her breath, her form, her cheek, and her mouth.
I would take on a matter whose restoration is bold

دَعانيdrew me لَهاto her أنّيthat I تَخَيَّرْتُهاchose her ذُخْراas a treasure
Leave me, you two, with love's treasured bonds; what
I took pleasure in al-Murtada, for aid I seek him
drew me to her was that I chose her as my treasure.
So his troops scan me--a deterrent host
فُطورٌcracks بِقَلْبيin my heart مِنfrom هَواهاlove for her مَنَعْنَنِيthey prevented me

Cracks in my heart from loving her kept me—
The most rightly-guided of the kings of earth, in opinion and banner
the Feast of Sacrifice forgotten too—from remembering the Feast of Fast-breaking.
With a victory and aid the victory and aid did not equal
وَعِنْدِيand within me الْتَقىmet الضِّدَّانِthe two opposites ماءٌwater ومارِجٌand smokeless flame

Within me the two opposites meet: water and smokeless flame.
To him inclined the virtues of the imams and ended
Ask my burning liver; my tearful eye will answer.
Endeavors for this world that give priority to the next
بَرَمْتُI grew weary بِهَجْرِof estrangement دَاوَلalternated with الوَصْلunion بُرْهةًfor a while

I wearied of estrangement that alternated awhile with union;
So whoever's state is adorned by commanding right and forbidding wrong
yet she has made parting final, making estrangement dear.
That is his finest garb, adorned by forbidding and commanding
هَلِis it? العَيْشُlife إِلاanything but أنto أغازلَI court غَادَةًa graceful maiden

Is life anything but courting a graceful maiden,
Brave, free in the caliphate, unanimously agreed upon
whose beauty rivals the sun and the full moon,
Good tidings of the religion through the boldest and freest
وَأسكُنُand I find repose مِنهاin her قاطِفاًplucking ثَمَرthe fruit of المُنىwishes

and, gathering desire's fruit, finding repose in her—
He loved and protected, joining and arriving
a comfort like a gazelle that never left my thoughts?
So no adversity confounded him, nor any panic
غلبتُI was overcome عليهاover her منْby رَداهاher death بِأغلَبby a mightier one

فَماso nothing بِيَديin my hand مِنهاof her الغداةَthis morning سِوىexcept الذكرىremembrance
A stronger foe—her death—overcame me in the struggle for her;
If war calls for help with his resolve
so this morning I have nothing of her but remembrance.
And its echo responds, watch for the first-born misfortune
ولَوْand if أنَّthat ماwhat لاcannot يُستَطاعُbe accomplished أعادَهَاbrought her back

تَجشّمتُI would have shouldered أمراًa task فيfor إعادَتِهاbringing her back إمْرَاformidable
Had even the impossible been able to restore her,
From the land and sea he attained what he intended
I would have shouldered a formidable task to bring her back,
The good fortune of an ancestor who served the land and sea
ولُذْتُand I sought refuge بِيَحْيىwith Yahya المُرْتَضَىal-Murtada أسْتَعينُهُseeking his aid

and sought refuge with Yahya al-Murtada, asking his aid;
So the night does not chide the day when it passes
then his champions would surround me, a host set in motion.
Out of enmity, preceding it, nor the year, the month

Of the earth's kings, the most deserving, in counsel and banner,
The years inaugurate him with openings as a service
of success and victory—may he never miss success and victory!
And inadequacy precedes fulfilling his contentment

To him belongs, and in him culminates, the excellence of the imams—
By God, his four tens of years continuously
worldly endeavors offered in advance for the hereafter.
Bring good tidings, each competing with the next

If command and prohibition grace another man's standing,
The nights' measure is their pride surrounding him
these virtues of his grace prohibition and command.
If his steeds trample obstinacy there

Bold, worthy of the caliphate, with all agreeing
Then his ships destroyed unbelief there
upon him—glad tidings to the faith in the boldest and worthiest!
His plunge into the enemies left them devastated

He bestowed and protected, his generosity and might evenly matched;
And the loftiest endeavor is that which established landings
his lofty qualities left neither hardship nor fear.
Some drew near, disturbing the dust cloud

When veteran war calls upon his resolve,
Others, the green seas wandered all around
and he answers its echo, await the maiden onslaught.
They aimed at the Christians' fleets, so they sank

All he intends on land and sea is made attainable for him,
Certain of their destruction through them
through the felicity of fortune that put land and sea at his service.
They wanted the Romans' lions dead, breakers of heroes

Night does not drive day away when he advances
But found no aid and lost face
straight toward his goal, nor does the year drive away the month.
They spilled the redness of their blood upon the grass

Parting beloveds in the hyacinth, reddened
and their ends outrun their beginnings in seeking his favor.
Together upon chain and shackle they herded them

To God belongs the year of forty! It has never ceased
And their hands do not deny killing and captivity
to be adorned through him with glad tidings, reinforced by further glad tidings.
No cure for the malady of polytheism is worse than them

You see its beginning vying with its end;
Facing the campaigner whose evil, once unleashed, raged
enough for the nights is the glory with which he garlands them.
Fruits of a master who brought righteousness and piety

in it his ships indeed uprooted unbelief.

His swift swimmers' advance engulfed his enemies
And days shone their faces, valorous
in ruin; the loftiest striving is that which embraces the land.
He approached, reading what was remote, rising high

Among them, pampered steeds that traversed the dusky, dust-colored earth,
So oh loftiest ascent, and oh amplest regard!
and tall-sailed ships that crossed the green seas.
His rule over us is bounty and blessing

And his life among us, the greatest favor
before their aimed attacks, certain those ships would overpower them.

the lions found no victory, nor did they lack a mauling.

so it delighted the eye, crimson anemones amid violets.
