The bonds of life are overtaken by rupture,

and there is no refuge from God's decree.

    al-Nu‘man lay where ‘Isam lay.

Prepare a defense for your appearance at judgment,

perhaps the dispute will not silence you.

And let no calamity but negligence weigh heavily

upon you, for it is the great calamity.

Tell me: will you face combat or turn away

    when barren war ensnares you?

And when departure comes suddenly, you do not know:

is it forgiveness for sins, or retribution?

    فليس لساكني الدنيا مقامُ

    [Opening word unclear] from the traveler, in heedless confidence;

for this world's inhabitants have no lasting abode.

And death is healing for the most pious,

just as life for him is sickness.

Beware, beware! You are amid seas

of this world, overflowing and crashing together.

And you know for certain that it brings ruin,

yet we plunge headlong into its wave-crests.

And one of the wonders is that bitterness has overtaken

its watering places, though the throng is great.
