خذهاtake it ولاand do not تلفظutter بغيرanything other than بيوتهاits verses
خذها ولا تلفظ بغير بيوتها
متمثلاًquoting poetry فالشهدُfor honey غيرunlike العلقمbitter colocynth
متمثلاً فالشهدُ غير العلقم
Take it, and utter nothing but its verses,
Take it and utter not but its houses
when quoting poetry, for honey is not bitter colocynth.
Performing, for the nectar is not bitter aloes
معسولةًhoney-sweet كالأريlike bees’ honey إلاexcept أنهاthat it
معسولةً كالأري إلا أنها
لكيودهاfor its scheming foe حُمَةُvenom الشُّجاعِthe serpent الأرقمthe speckled one
لكيودها حُمَةُ الشُّجاعِ الأرقم
Honey-sweet as bees’ honey, yet it is
Sweet as the saliva, save that its
for its scheming foe the venom of the speckled serpent.
Sting is the wrath of the unblemished hero
لاno عيبflaw فيهاin it غيرexcept ذكرmention of زعانفriffraff
لا عيب فيها غير ذكر زعانف
جهلواthey were ignorant فهمُّواso they sought بانتقادto criticize الأنجمthe stars
جهلوا فهمُّوا بانتقاد الأنجم
It has no flaw except its mention of riffraff,
No fault in it but mention of fins
who, in their ignorance, sought to criticize the stars.
They erred in understanding, criticizing the stars
والشّهبand the bright stars لوif مزجتwere mixed لكمfor you بجنادلwith boulders
والشّهب لو مزجت لكم بجنادل
لمnot تَفْرِقواyou distinguish بينbetween الصَّفاthe smooth stones والمرزمand al-Mirzam
لم تَفْرِقوا بين الصَّفا والمرزم
And if the bright stars were mixed for you with boulders,
And if the meteors were mixed for you in buckets
you would not distinguish smooth stone from al-Mirzam.
You would not distinguish Safa from Marwah
