    Take heed: time is treacherous,

and time's calamities are of many kinds.

It is time for calamities to emerge from obscurity,

and for hopes to meet with doubts and suspicions.

How many a nation has passed, one after another,

and one generation is followed thereafter by generations.

My eye has seen, and my ears have listened—

if only the heart's hard stone would soften.

I have seen only a newcomer who had scarcely loosened

his saddle-straps before being called a departing traveler.

    أَوائِلُهُمْ للآخرينَ رُهون

    Nor anyone remaining except in the wake of one gone before;

their predecessors are pledges for their successors.

Nor anyone joyful but his day was followed

by time's unceasing lamentation and sorrows.

Woe to time's vicissitudes! How much has passed before it:

an unending inheritance for us, and debts.

It had conveyed the counsel of one concerned

for us; but the counselor was distrusted.

And yesterday terror filled my breast

with news of death whose ringing filled the horizon.

It came to me, giving me no respite to take refuge

in disbelief before certainty spread far and wide.

And it came, naked as the dawn: whenever

the discerning eye denied it, it grew clearer.

Ah, my sorrow, that he turned toward parting and distance,

and the den stood empty of the lion of the field.

And a verdant branch from glory's heights withered,

and the lofty palace stood empty of a man of standing.

What ails the hills—may rain's lightning never water them—

that their blossoms and branches flutter?

And what ails the solid mountains, that they did not split with grief,

while blossoms flutter and rest after his passing?

And what ails the sword-blades, that their cutting edges did not fail,

and the brown spears, that their shafts did not break?

    كذا يَعْقُبُ الصبحَ المنيرَ دُجون

    Thus the radiant full moon is eclipsed at its fullness;

thus darkness follows the radiant dawn.

    كذا يُسْتَخَفُّ الطَّوْدُ وهو رصين

    Thus glory is wronged, though firmly founded;

thus the great mountain is held lightly, though steadfast.

Thus lawful generosity departs, and far away are flung

    fragrant virtues by far-off separation.

As though those keen swords and spears had never

obeyed his command on the day of battle.

As though he had never been time's cherished treasure,

adorning its days and lending them beauty.

As though, for you, his lance and spearhead held

the enemies' deaths, drawing near through him and coming due.

Were they not shamed by his charges and swordplay—

horsemen who held back from him, standing motionless?

Did they not care for glory, generosity, and exalted honor—

swords that no right hand set in motion?

And in battle, by slender brown spears, he had been

protected, as eyelids protect the eyes.

Why then, when he plunged into hardships as into a deep sea,

did a poised steed among the sleek thoroughbreds not shield him?

And since he had no wish to flee from death,

why did no stronghold of deep-rooted glory protect him?

And why did time not spare him? For it

is surely miserly toward me in showing us his like.

So if he has departed worthy of praise, then

God alone guarantees him an immense treasure in store.
