ياO مَنْyou who سَباtook captive ريّاهُhis fragrance عَرْفُthe scent of الصِّباyouth
وذرَّand rose منfrom أزرارهِhis buttons شارِقُa rising sun
O you whose fragrance the scent of youth has taken captive,
and from whose buttons a sun has risen.
ذَرْنِيleave me وعينيكَwith your two eyes أُسائِلْهُماI question them both
بأيَّfor what ذنبٍsin قُتِلَwas slain الوامقthe lover
Leave me with your two eyes, that I may ask them:
For what sin was the lover slain?
تاللهِby God ماnot أَمْلِكُI control نجوايَmy secret ياO
مملوكُslave والدمعُand tears بهof it ناطقspeaking
By God, I cannot contain my secret, O
slave, and tears speak of it.
أنَّىhow لمثليfor one like me فيكَfor you كَتْمُconcealment of الهوىlove
والدمعُwhile tears سَكْبٌstreaming والحشاand the heart خافقthrobbing
How can one like me conceal his love for you,
when tears stream and the heart throbs?
