ياO قَمَراًa moon مَطلَعُهُits rising-place فِيin الحَشىthe heart
يا قَمَراً مَطلَعُهُ فِي الحَشى
سُبحانَGlory be to مَنthe One who فيin خَلَدِيmy mind خَلّدَكmade you immortal
سُبحانَ مَن في خَلَدِي خَلّدَك
O moon whose rising-place is in my heart,
O moon rising in the horizon
Glory to Him who made you immortal in my mind.
Glory to Him who made you eternal in my heart
لَمnot يُعطَwas given ماwhat أَعطِيتَyou were given خَلقاًany creature وَلاnor
لَم يُعطَ ما أَعطِيتَ خَلقاً وَلا
أَفرَدَهُsingled him out اللَهُGod بِماwith what أَفرَدَكHe singled you out
أَفرَدَهُ اللَهُ بِما أَفرَدَك
No creature was given what you were given, nor
None were given what you were given, nor
did God single anyone out as He singled you out.
Were they exclusively favored by God as you were
لَوif قُلتَyou said لِلبَدرِto the full moon أَلَستَare you not الَّذيthe one whom
لَو قُلتَ لِلبَدرِ أَلَستَ الَّذي
فُقتُكَI surpassed you فيin الحُسنِbeauty لَماwould not فَنّدكcontradict you
فُقتُكَ في الحُسنِ لَما فَنّدك
If you said to the full moon, “Are you not the one
If you said to the full moon, am I not the one
I surpassed in beauty?” it would not contradict you.
Who surpassed you in beauty, it would not respond
صِلنِيunite with me وَلَوand even if فيin غَمراتِthe depths الكَرىslumber
صِلنِي وَلَو في غَمراتِ الكَرى
وَعِدand promise وَإِنand even if لَمnot تُنجِزَنyou fulfill مَوعِدَكyour promise
وَعِد وَإِن لَم تُنجِزَن مَوعِدَك
Join me, even in the depths of slumber,
Unite me, even in the darkness of time
and promise, even if you do not keep your promise.
Promise, even if you don’t fulfill your promise
كَمhow often قُلتُI said لِلكأسِto the cup وَقَدand already نِلتَهاyou took it
كَم قُلتُ لِلكأسِ وَقَد نِلتَها
لَمّاwhen دَنَتit drew near مِنto فيكَyour mouth ماhow أَسعَدَكfortunate you are
لَمّا دَنَت مِن فيكَ ما أَسعَدَك
How often I said to the cup, once you had taken it,
How often I said to the wine cup, now that you have attained it
as it approached your mouth, “How fortunate you are!”
How happy are you with what it gave you
هِمتُI fell madly in love فَماso how أَدناكَclose you are مِنto مُهجَتيmy soul
هِمتُ فَما أَدناكَ مِن مُهجَتي
وَدِنتَand you adhered بِالهَجرِto estrangement فَماso how أَبعَدَكfar away you are
وَدِنتَ بِالهَجرِ فَما أَبعَدَك
I fell madly in love—how close you are to my soul!
I yearned, but could not bring you closer to my passions
And you embraced estrangement—how far away you are!
You kept your distance with separation, how far you went
قَدindeed خَصَّكsingled you out اللَهُGod عَلِيّاًAli بِماwith what
قَد خَصَّك اللَهُ عَلِيّاً بِما
شِئتَyou wished مِنَof الحُسنِbeauty وَقَدand indeed أَيَّدَكHe strengthened you
شِئتَ مِنَ الحُسنِ وَقَد أَيَّدَك
God has singled you out, Ali, with whatever
God especially favored you with all
beauty you wished for, and has strengthened you.
The beauty you desired, and supported you
مَلّكَكَgave you dominion over الدُنياthe world وَأَربابَهاand its lords
مَلّكَكَ الدُنيا وَأَربابَها
وَصيّرَand made الناسَthe people بِهاin it أَعبُدَكyour slaves
وَصيّرَ الناسَ بِها أَعبُدَك
He gave you dominion over the world and its lords,
He made you king of this world and its masters
and made the people in it your slaves.
And made people through it your servants
فَاِحكُمso rule عَلىover الكُلِّall بِماaccording to what شِئتَهُyou willed it
فَاِحكُم عَلى الكُلِّ بِما شِئتَهُ
أَنهَضَكَmay He strengthen you اللَهُGod بِماfor what قَلّدَكHe entrusted to you
أَنهَضَكَ اللَهُ بِما قَلّدَك
So rule over all as you wish;
So judge all as you wish
may God strengthen you for the charge He entrusted to you.
God elevated you with what He entrusted you
وَامدُدand reinforce فُؤادِيmy heart بِجُنودِwith the armies الهُوىlove
وَامدُد فُؤادِي بِجُنودِ الهُوى
أَيَّدَكَmay He support you اللَهُGod وَأَعلىand raise يَدَكyour hand
أَيَّدَكَ اللَهُ وَأَعلى يَدَك
And reinforce my heart with the armies of love.
And let my heart overflow with armies of passion
May God support you and give you the upper hand.
God aided you and lifted your hand
