O dawn's radiance beneath the twilight gloom!

Is the fine down upon your cheeks an embroidered band,

Or gardens embroidered by a raincloud,

And among them the temple-lock appeared like a serpent?

I do not know: is it the arrows of your glance that

I guard against, or the bite of that speckled serpent?

My father be ransom for those bows of yours, which have never ceased

    Shooting arrows that never miss.

They struck a throbbing heart that blazes

Like a flame in the hands of one who trembles.

Many a night I spent sleepless,

My bedding made of nothing but thornbushes,

Swimming in deep seas of tears, and yet

I complain of the burning anguish of thirst.

And the night's lightning, in its radiance,

Is like swords in the hands of Abyssinians.

And God's sky reveals a moon,

Bright of brow, like Ibn al-Qurashi.

And there is no difference in radiance between them,

Nor in splendor, if they both rise in twilight gloom,

Except that the horizon is home to the one,

And the precinct of Bab al-Hanash to the other.
