ياO طائرَbird of البانِthe bān tree إنْif آنَسْتَyou find مُؤْتَمناًsomeone entrusted
سرَّthe secret of الغرامardent love فلاthen let not يعلمْknow بهof it البانُthe bān tree
O bird of the bān tree, if you find someone entrusted
O bird of the branches, if you meet a confidant
with love’s secret, let not the bān tree know it.
Conceal the secret of passion, let not the branches know
إنَّindeed الأوانسَthe maidens أغصانٌbranches مهيمنةٌdominant
وقدand indeed أغارَraided علىupon الأغصانِthe branches أغصانbranches
Indeed, the maidens are branches that hold sway,
Lovers are branches in command
and branches have raided the branches.
While branches have descended upon the branches
شجويmy sorrow وشجوُكَand your sorrow مقرونانboth bound together فيin قَرَنٍa coupling cord
إلاexcept جفونيmy eyelids لهاthey have سحٌّtorrential pouring وتهتانand continuous streaming
My sorrow and yours are bound together by one cord,
My passion and your passion are twinned in an epoch
except that my eyelids shed torrents and ceaseless showers.
Except my eyelids are infatuated and delirious
أبكيI weep for العقيقَal-ʿAqīq وأياماًand days بهin it سَلَفَتْpassed
سَقَىmay ... water العقيقَal-ʿAqīq مُلِثُّunceasing in الودقِrainfall حَنَّانrumbling with thunder
I weep for al-ʿAqīq and the days gone by there.
I weep for the jujube and days gone by with it
May a rumbling cloud of ceaseless rain water al-ʿAqīq.
The jujube was watered by the tender dew
فكلماfor whenever زادَincreased دمعيmy tears زادنيincreased my عطشاًthirst
فالقلبُfor the heart ظامthirsty وجفنُand the eyelid of العينthe eye ريَّانwell-watered
For whenever my tears increase, they increase my thirst;
So the more my tears increased, the more thirsty I became
for the heart is thirsty, while the eyelid is drenched.
For the heart is thirsty while the eyelids are sated
