I shall lament the faded trace of their dwelling,
I lament the ruins of their dwelling place
And ask the cool, moist wind about them.
And ask the gentle breeze about them

I am smitten with a slender-waisted beauty, one of Najd’s gazelles,
In me is a yearning from the gazelles of Najd
Who resembles a bough and a curving dune of loose sand.
Rivaling the branch and the swaying palm

I say, as she vanished from sight that day at Hazwa,
I say, since the day they hid away
Behind her curtain, having aided the camel-train:
My eyes wept and my tears flowed
كرهتِyou spurned منازلاًas dwelling places قلبيmy heart وعينيand my eye
فكيفhow, then رضيتِyou accepted أحشائيmy entrails مقيلاas a place of noonday rest
You spurned my heart and eye as dwelling places;
My heart and eyes hated the dwellings
How, then, did you accept my entrails as a place of noonday rest?
So how did my inner self accept a new home
