نادمتُهُI drank with him فقرعتُthen I struck السنَّthe tooth منْfrom ندمِregret
نادمتُهُ فقرعتُ السنَّ منْ ندمِ
فيin جنحthe gloom of ليلa night كحاليlike my plight حالكِpitch-black الظُّلَمِthe darkness
في جنح ليل كحالي حالكِ الظُّلَمِ
I drank with him, then gnashed my teeth in regret,
I regretted it, so I struck my teeth in remorse
In the gloom of a night, pitch-black as my plight.
In the wings of a night as dark as your darkness
غنَّىhe sang يرددُrepeating ياO شوقيmy longing لظعنهمُfor their departure
غنَّى يرددُ يا شوقي لظعنهمُ
فردَّدso it echoed السمعُhearing ياO شوقيmy longing إلىfor الصممdeafness
فردَّد السمعُ يا شوقي إلى الصمم
He sang, repeating, 'O my longing for their departure!'
He sang repeating, "Oh my longing for their wailing!"
So my hearing echoed, 'O my longing for deafness!'
So hearing echoed back, "Oh longing for deafness!"
