وللغرام وغى فرسانها المقل
Humor love, for the sword blades' dominion has its turns.
The abode of love, so the antelope reign
And passion wages a war whose knights are eyes.
And passion's fervor makes its horsemen vain

حُمَّ الحمامُ وخام المُحْرَبُ البطل
Whenever the tame gazelles turn their eyes,
When the does of intimacy turn their eyes
Death is decreed, and the seasoned, valiant warrior quails.
The pigeons coo and the warrior's sword is plain

بين الجوانح بيضُ الهندِ والأسل
As though the glances of the shy maidens among the fair ones
As if the glances of the white eggs flutter
Were Indian swords and spears between the ribs.
Between the breasts, Indian white and dark gazelle

They departed; never had my soul known midmorning suns
They appeared, and never has my soul known dawns
Whose rising places had become docile she-camels,
Whose risings were so gently bright and well

Until I saw the tribe's domed tents raised,
Until I saw the pavilions of the tribe raised up
And curtains hung loosely over their breasts.
And the crowns were lowered over their cheeks' parallel

فما لنا غيرُ أنفاسِ الصِّبا رسل
They settled in the sandy expanses of the protected pasture, far away;
They camped in the vales of ardent fever and went far
So we have no messengers but the breaths of the east wind.
So we have naught but the breezes of morn that tell
