Have I any fellow mourner but the heavy-lashed clouds,

whose longing blazes amid burning pangs?

For the blossoms' smiling at the clouds' weeping

has shown that their tears are deliberately shed.

O you who reproach me, I have indeed poured out my tears

when a familiar haunt on the hillside was bereft of her.

You would have judged my view on weeping the right one,

if your night, like mine, were endless.

Dawn's rising-places are barred before us,

and the star is fettered, unable to step toward its setting.

Do not condemn my heart's fluttering, for it is

drunk and riotous on the wine of eyelids.

And ask the Yemeni riders who

departed with Mayya: where is the meeting-place with her?

Within her red canopy is a wild-ox calf,

drowsy-eyed, smooth of breast, and lissome.

The radiant stars quivered in jealousy of him,

when his neck adorned itself with pearls.

And the doves wept with yearning, if they were not

warbling on the tender bough of his stature.

So let those leaving at dawn know that my ribs

are the abode of loved ones, whether they seek lowlands or highlands.

Or do the riders recite among their saddles,

now separation has hurled them away, what they once recited?

The heart was lost the morning they departed, and is not

found anywhere but at those stopping-places.
