خليليَّO my two friends ماwhat عُذْريmy excuse إلىto الركبِthe caravan بعدماnow that
تقضَّتْhave ended لياليهمْtheir nights ولمand not يَنْقَضِcome to an end العمرُlife
My two friends, what excuse can I offer the caravan, now that
their nights have ended, yet life has not?
بكيتُI wept فلمbut did not يقضِfulfill البكاweeping حقَّthe due of مَدْمَعٍa tearful eye
حياتيَmy living يوماًfor one day بعدafter فُرْقَتِهِparting from him غَدْرُbetrayal
I wept, but weeping did not pay a tearful eye its due;
my living even one day after parting from him is betrayal.
وماand not جَزَعيmy anguish إلاّexcept لأبلجَfor a radiant-faced man إنif سرىhe travels by night
معwith البدرِthe full moon وَهْنَاًlate at night قيلَit is said أيُّهماwhich of the two البدرthe full moon
My anguish is only for a radiant-faced man: if he travels
with the full moon late at night, people ask, 'Which of the two is the full moon?'
رعىmay watch over اللهُGod عبدservant of اللهGod حيثُwherever تيممتْthey headed

May God watch over Abd Allah, wherever they head—
his riding camels—or wherever the travelers alight with him.
أُوَدِّعُهُI bid him farewell والليلُwhile the night يُودِعُlodges in أَضْلُعيmy ribs

I bid him farewell while the night lodges in my ribs
anxieties brought on by yearning and thought.
إلىto اللهGod أشكوI complain نيّةًa departure بعدَafter نيّةٍa departure
يُكلفناburdens us منهاwith them عوائدَهُits customary ways الدهرTime
To God I complain of departure after departure,
with which Time burdens us, true to its old ways.
ألاah ليتَwould that شعريmy knowing والحوادثُwhile calamities جمّةٌare many
متىwhen يَرْعَويwill desist عنْfrom جَهْلِهِits folly الحادثُthe calamity البكرthe fresh one
Ah, would that I knew—calamities are many—
when the fresh calamity will desist from its folly.
أفيis there in كلِّevery يومٍday لابنِfor the son of دأيةَDaʾya فَتْكَةٌa deadly assault

Must Ibn Daʾya, the raven, each day deal a deadly blow,
repeated or new, in the courtyards of homes?
لقدindeed سعتِhave labored الأيّامُthe days بينيbetween me وبينكمْand between you
بكفٍّwith a hand لهاit has نظمٌstringing together وأُخرىand another لهاit has نثرscattering
Indeed, the days have labored between me and you,
with one hand stringing together, and another scattering.
وقدand indeed كنتُI used to أشكوcomplain منكمُfrom you هجرَestrangement ساعةٍan hour
فمنْthen who لفؤاديfor my heart أنْthat يدومَshould endure لهfor it الهجرestrangement
I once complained of an hour's estrangement from you;
who, then, will help my heart bear estrangement that endures?
سلامٌpeace علىupon أيّامكمْyour days ماas long as بكىweeps الحياthe rain
وَسَقْياًand rain's blessing لذاكَfor that العهدِtime ماas long as ابتسمَsmiles الزهرthe flowers
Peace upon your days, as long as the rain weeps,
and may that time be blessed with rain, as long as flowers smile.

منَof الليلةِthe night الليلاءِdeep-dark أرديةٌmantles خُضْرgreen
As though we had never spent a night in safety's shade, enfolded
in green mantles of the deep-dark night;
ولمand not نغتبقwe drink at evening تلكthose الأحاديثَconversations قهوةًwine
وكمand many a مجلسٍgathering طِيْبُthe sweetness of الحديثِconversation بهin it خمرwine
nor drunk those conversations as evening wine—
and many a gathering has the sweetness of talk for its wine!
ألاah فيin ضمانِthe keeping of اللهِGod منthe one who كلَّevery ساعةٍhour

Ah, in God's keeping be the one whom, every hour,
my longing for him brings anew to mind.
يُذَكِّرُنِيهِreminds me of him البرقُthe lightning جذلانَjoyful باسماًsmiling
ويُذَكِّرُنيand reminds me of إسْفارَthe radiance of غُرَّتِهِhis brow الفجرthe dawn
Lightning reminds me of him, joyful and smiling,
and dawn reminds me of the radiance of his brow.
وماand never رفَّshimmered زهرُthe flowers of الروضِthe garden إلاّbut تمثَّلَتْappeared

And whenever the garden's flowers shimmer, there appear
before my eyes his radiant graces.
فياso, O مربعَplace of التوديعِfarewell لاno غروَwonder أننيthat I
تحمّلتُI bore away منهfrom it فوقَbeyond ماwhat يسعُcan hold الصدرthe breast
So, O place of farewell, no wonder that I
have borne away from it more than a breast can hold.
فواللهfor, by God ماnot للقلبِfor the heart بعدكafter you سلوةٌsolace
ولاnor للدموعِfor the tears الحمرِred إنْif لمnot تَفِضْthey overflow عُذْرan excuse
For, by God, the heart has no solace after you,
nor have the crimson tears any excuse if they do not flow.
