My two friends, what ails me, that whenever lightning flashes,

tears stream from my eyes in torrents and showers?

So, from a tearful eye that rains down longing,

and from a burning liver that wrestles with sorrows.

And that is only because I am utterly love-distraught:

I go at evening and morning, drunk without tawny wine.

I remembered a slave across the vast distance of separation,

and he stirred anguish and sorrows in the lovelorn one.

And I am but the property of that slave of mine,

since whose departure sleep has shunned my eyelids.

He did wrong, yet out of love I say:

May God reward that gazelle with kindness on my behalf.
