    خَلعَ الشبابُ عليه فهو لباسُه

    Dew-fresh is youth’s tender bough, graceful in its sway;

    youth has robed him and is his raiment.

    ظبيٌ وأحناءُ الضلوعِ كِناسُه

    A moon, with the heart’s recesses for his horizons;

    a gazelle, with the curves of the ribs for his covert.

    We did not know, when the east wind brought his breath’s scent,

    whether camphor was exhaling fragrance, or his breath.

    And indeed we were baffled as our intoxication continued:

    was it his glances that swayed us, or his cup?

    Beauty has, inscribed upon his cheeks,

    a line; his cheek’s surface is its parchment.

    If those charms are at odds with his conduct,

    a sword’s hilt, too, is forged from a different substance.
