حتىuntil تبدَّىappeared وميضُthe gleam of المرْهَفِthe honed blade الذَّلِقِkeen-edged
She visited you, fearful of the slanderer's watch,
until the gleam of the honed, keen-edged blade appeared.

نهرٍa river يَغصُّchoke بهon it الواشونthe slanderers منْfrom شَرَقchoking on water
Then her heart was calmed when I held the two banks
of a river whose waters make the slanderers choke.
سكَّنتهاI soothed her بعدafter ماthat جالتْhad coursed مدامِعُهاher tears

I soothed her after her tears had coursed
through her eyes, like watered patterns on the pupils' blades.
فأقبلتْthen she approached بينbetween صمتٍsilence منfrom خلاخلهاher anklets

Then she approached between the silence of her anklets
and the speech of a shifting, restless sash.

She loosed a darkness from her folded hair
on a night that had loosed a tress of darkness.

She appears a crescent moon, and her jewels shooting stars,
so earth cannot be distinguished from the horizon.
غازلْتهاI wooed her والدجىwhile the darkness الغربيبُraven-black قدalready خُلعتْhad been bestowed

I wooed her; the raven-black darkness had bestowed
upon her cheeks a robe of twilight,

until night's shadow shrank and there burst forth
within it, for dawn, wellsprings of breaking light.

Then the night-traveling rainclouds robed themselves, sharing my grief
at parting with copious, streaming tears.

فإنْso if تَثِقْyou trust بصروفِin the vicissitudes of الدهرِtime لاnot أَثِقِI trust
I have tested my time through all its changes;
so if you trust the turns of time, I do not.

Ask me, and I will tell you of them: their watering place
never runs clear for the noble man without turning murky again.

I am he who remained cloaked in calamities
among mankind, as a sword is cloaked in clotted blood,

and bare of fortune in his youth—
and many a fresh bough is bare of leaves.

How can my time shoulder what
my soul has asked, when the days' nature is unlike my own?

Restlessness will find no rest in one who loves love
until his mounts pass the night restless.
