I have a beloved whom exile has carried far away;
I have a beloved whom exile has carried far away.
for that exile, my eyes have poured forth rain clouds.
For that exile, my eyes poured forth rain-clouds.
ماnot حَسُنَwas beautiful الصبحُthe dawn ولاnor راقنيpleased me
بياضُهُits whiteness مذsince بانَdeparted فيin الظَّعنjourneying
Dawn’s beauty does not please me, nor does
Dawn has held no beauty, nor have I delighted in
its whiteness, since he departed with the caravan.
Its whiteness since he departed on his journey.
كأنماas though الصُّبْحُthe dawn لناfor us بعدَهُafter him
عينٌan eye قدindeed ابْيَضَّتْhas turned white منfrom الحزنgrief
As though the dawn, for us after him,
It is as though dawn, for us after his departure,
were an eye gone white with grief.
Were an eye that has turned white from grief.
