ألاcome now اقْصريdesist لاnot أُطيعُI obey العذلَthe reproach فيconcerning رَشَأٍa young gazelle
ألا اقْصري لا أُطيعُ العذلَ في رَشَأٍ
فيfor مثلِهِone like him لاnot يزالُceases الصبُّthe lovesick lover يعصيكِdisobeys you
في مثلِهِ لا يزالُ الصبُّ يعصيكِ
Come now, desist: I will not heed reproach over a young gazelle.
No, do not be short with me, I cannot obey separation in youth
For one like him, the lovesick lover never ceases to defy you.
In the likes of it, passion does not stop disobeying you
إنindeed الهوىpassion حاكمٌa judge ألاَّthat not تُرىbe seen كبدٌa liver
إن الهوى حاكمٌ ألاَّ تُرى كبدٌ
دونَwithout انصداعٍbeing rent وجسمٌand a body غيرَnot منهوكexhausted
دونَ انصداعٍ وجسمٌ غيرَ منهوك
Indeed, passion decrees that no liver be seen
Verily love is the ruler, do you not see a liver
Without being rent, nor any body unexhausted.
Without splitting, and a body no longer exhausted
قدindeed صيَّرhas made الحبlove كالمملوكlike a slave فيهfor him وإنand if
قد صيَّر الحب كالمملوك فيه وإن
سُئِلْتَyou are asked عنّيabout me فقوليthen say عبدُa slave مملوكowned
سُئِلْتَ عنّي فقولي عبدُ مملوك
Love for him has made me like a slave; and if
Love has shaped me into a slave within it, and if
You are asked about me, say: 'A slave in bondage.'
You are asked about me, say a slave, owned
