وحمَامٌ بِذُرى الأيكِ صَدَحْ
A stream of tears poured from the rainclouds’ eyes,
Tears poured from the rain clouds’ eyes,
while a dove sang from the treetops.
and doves sang from the grove’s treetops.

بين ريحانٍ وراحٍ تُصْطَبَح
So pluck delight in the garden of desires,
So pluck pleasure in the garden of wishes,
amid sweet basil and wine for the morning draught,
amid sweet basil and wine drunk in the morning,

بدموعٍ أسبلتها فانتَضَح
beneath a sky that sprinkled the earth’s cheek
and a sky that sprinkled the earth’s cheek
with tears it let fall, leaving it glistening wet.
with tears it shed, so the cheek grew wet.

أَرسلتْ نفطاً به قوسُ قزح
The lightning across its far reaches seemed
And it was as though the lightning in its reaches
a jet of naphtha fired by the rainbow.
were naphtha shot forth by the rainbow’s bow.
