O young men of the clan, hold back those wide eyes

from us; concern yourselves with gleaming swords and spears.

We fear—though al-Khatt's brown spears are leveled—

the supple lances among you, not dry spear-shafts.

And we seek refuge with bright blades girded in scabbards

from the keen blades of fair women arrayed in robes.

How can swords clothed in steel-blue compare

    with swords clothed in kohl?

Your white gazelles shelter within our ribs, even if

they say, “Parting's herald summoned the herd, and it departed.”

O gazelle of the lowlands, we desire no uplands, nor

seek any change from life among your ruined dwellings.

Why does your phantom haunt your dwellings,

yet your jinn prepare no welcome for it?

How miserly you are, though your clan has always

called its scattered folk to an open feast in famine.

And you betray, though this house of your honor

stands allied with glory in height and eminence in stature.

As for solace, now that your camels have departed,

I claim neither she-camel nor he-camel in it.

I stood in the dwelling's open courts, asking it

about the people—what they had done—and the old bond—what became of it.

We recalled the clan's laden camels, and there was borne

within our ribs a passion that weighed the camels down.

And many a time we enjoyed companionship, and I cannot

tell whether Time pitied us, or slept, or grew heedless.

And many a tender maiden shone as a sun; she never unveiled

without lending twilight the sun's mantle.

    إذا رمت فحسبنا قومَها ثعلا

    Of Aden, yet of Adnan when her lineage is traced;

when she shoots, we reckon her people Thuʿal.

All night she regaled me with her saliva's tawny wine,

while the star watched her with a squinting glance,

until the wolf's tail appeared, hurrying us on

by lifting the darkness of night that had hung down.

Ah, the full moon that spent the night cradled in my arm,

only to set when the morning sun arose!

And ah, that dune-grown branch, so supple in its curves:

I watered it with tears until it bore kisses.
