وَماand whatever أَنَسَI forget لاnot أَنسَI forget اِزدِياريmy visit بِلَيلَةٍon a night
طَرَقتُI visited by night بِهاduring it الذَلفاءَthe snub-nosed beauty دُونَwithout رَقِيبِa watcher
And whatever I forget, I shall not forget my visit one night,
When I called upon the snub-nosed beauty, with no watcher near.
دَعَوتُI called وَراءbehind السِجفِthe curtain مِنهاfrom her جِدايَةًa gazelle fawn
مَرابُعهاher pastures فيin أَضلُعٍribs وَقُلُوبِand hearts
I called to her behind the curtain—a gazelle fawn
Whose pastures lie within ribs and hearts.
تُمَسِّحُshe wipes away عَنfrom أَجفانِهاher eyelids سِنَةَdrowsiness الكَرىsleep
بِراحَةِwith a palm فِضِّيّsilvery البَنانِthe fingertips خَضِيبِhenna-stained
She wipes sleep's drowsiness from her eyelids
With a hand whose silvery fingertips are henna-stained.
فَغازَلتُهاso I wooed her وَاللَيلُwhile the night مُلقٍlaying down جِرانَهُits neck
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَهادَتglided gently نجمَةٌa star لِغُرُوبِtoward setting
So I wooed her, while night lay with its neck outstretched,
Until a star glided gently toward its setting.
وَنازَعتُهاand I exchanged with her شَكوىlaments أَلَذَّsweeter مِنthan الكَرىsleep
تُسَكِّنُit soothes مِنsome of لَذعٍburning pain بِهاwithin her وَوَجيبِand heart-throbbing
And I traded laments with her, sweeter than sleep,
Easing some of the burning and throbbing within her.
فَياso, oh لَيتَif only أَنَّthat النَسرَthe Eagle قُصَّwere clipped جَناحُهُits wing
وَياand oh لَيتَif only أَنّthat الصُبحَdawn غَيرُnot قَرِيبnear
Oh, if only the Eagle's wing were clipped,
And if only dawn were not near!
