أإخوانَنا والموتُ قد حال دونَنا

O our brothers—death has come between us,

and death's decree holds sway over all creatures.

سبقتكمُ للموتِ والعمرُ ظِنَّةٌ

سبقتكمُ للموتِ والعمرُ ظِنَّةٌ

وأعلمُ أنَّ الكلَّ لا بدَّ لاحقي

وأعلمُ أنَّ الكلَّ لا بدَّ لاحقي

I have gone before you to death, and life is uncertain,

and I know that everyone must follow me.

بعيشكمُ أو باضطجاعيَ في الثَّرى

بعيشكمُ أو باضطجاعيَ في الثَّرى

ألم تَكُ في صَفْوٍ من الودِّ رائق

ألم تَكُ في صَفْوٍ من الودِّ رائق

By your lives, or by my lying in the dust—

were you not amid pure, unclouded affection?

فمن مرَّ بي فليمضِ بي مُترَحِّماً

فمن مرَّ بي فليمضِ بي مُترَحِّماً

ولا يكُ مَنْسِيّاً وفاءُ الأصادق

ولا يكُ مَنْسِيّاً وفاءُ الأصادق

So whoever passes by me, let him go past me praying for mercy,

and let the loyalty of true friends not be forgotten.
