ألاAh! ادنُdraw near وإنand even if ضاقis cramped النَّديّthe gathering place فإنهfor it
ألا ادنُ وإن ضاق النَّديّ فإنه
رحيبٌspacious بودٍّwith affection ضُمِّنَتْهُwere made to contain it الأضالعُthe ribs
رحيبٌ بودٍّ ضُمِّنَتْهُ الأضالعُ
Ah, draw near, even if the gathering place is cramped, for it
is spacious with the affection held within the ribs.
يضيقُis too narrow الفضاthe open expanse عنfor صاحبينِtwo companions تباغضاhated one another
يضيقُ الفضا عن صاحبينِ تباغضا
وسمُّand an eye خياطٍof a needle بالحبيبينfor the two lovers واسعُspacious
وسمُّ خياطٍ بالحبيبين واسعُ
The open expanse is too narrow for two companions who hate one another,
yet a needle’s eye is spacious for two lovers.
