سَلامٌa greeting كَماas هَبَّblew النَسيمُthe breeze عَلىover الوَردِthe roses
وَخاضَتand waded through جُفونَthe eyelids اللَيلِthe night إِغفاءَةُa brief slumber الفَجرِdawn
A greeting, as the breeze blew over the roses,
Peace like the breeze that blew upon the rose
And dawn’s brief slumber waded through the eyelids of night,
And the eyelids of night plunged into the dawn's slumber
وَهَزَّand shook هُبوبُthe blowing الريحthe wind عِطفَthe flank أَراكَةٍan arak tree
فَمالَتso it swayed كَماas مالَswayed النَزيفُthe drunken man مَعwith السكرِintoxication
And the blowing wind shook an arak tree’s flank,
The blowing wind shook a palm tree's bend
So it swayed as a drunken man sways in intoxication,
So it swayed like the swaying of intoxication with sobriety
عَلىupon مَنone who إِذاwhen وَدّعتُهُI bade him farewell أَودَعhe deposited الحَشىthe heart
لَهيباًa flame تَلَظّىblazed فيin الجَوانِحِthe ribs وَالصَدرِand the breast
To him who, when I bade him farewell, left in my heart
For the one whom when I bid farewell I leave
A flame that blazed within my ribs and breast;
A flame kindled in the core and chest
وَمَنand one who لَمnot يَزَلhe has ceased to be نَشوانَintoxicated مِنfrom خَمرَةِthe wine of الصِباyouth

And to him who has never ceased to be drunk on the wine of youth,
And he who remains intoxicated with the wine of youth
As I have never ceased to be drunk on the wine of remembrance.
As I remain intoxicated with the wine of remembrance

May God bring our mutual visits nearer,
May God bring us close in visitation
So I may be carried from the hardship of parting into ease.
And move me from the hardship of parting to ease
