A fringe of night above a radiant dawn,
A night's cloudlet o'er a shining dawn,
or the darkness of the locks above the brow?
Or grief's darkness upon my brow?
وابِأبيand may my father be the ransom مَنْthe one whom أرتضيI accept حُكْمَهُhis judgment
وابِأبي مَنْ أرتضي حُكْمَهُ

في مُهْجَتي وهو من الظالمين
And may my father ransom the one whose judgment I accept
By my father! Whoever I choose to arbitrate,
over my lifeblood, though he is among the unjust.
In my love, yet he sides against me.

A supple youth, upon whose cheek lies a garden,
In his cheek's garden is a meadow
where the flowing water of youth runs.
Where flows the water of youth, ever fresh,

I said, as he approached, strutting in
I said, as he swaggered flaunting
his mantle, captivating the minds of those who gaze:
His cloak, captivating with his glance.

This is the full moon and the bough of the sand dune;
This is the full moon, branch of softness -
so do not be among those who doubt him.
Do not doubt him!

I became enamored of him, dusky and possessed of beauty,
I hung upon him, craving the delight
through which enchantment took form before the eyes.
That magic worked within my eyes at dawn.

His cheek is embroidered with the water of youth—
His cheek tattooed with rain of youth -
what roses, and what jasmine!
No less than rose and jasmine.

For him I obeyed the impulses of love,
I obeyed the promptings of passion for him
and never ceased defying the reproachers for his sake.
And never ceased defying those who censure.

And I guarded myself against loving anyone but him,
I protected my soul from love of any but him
with guarded embroidery from the garden of his cheeks.
From the meadow of his cheek, in safekeeping.

And if any sight but his delighted me
Had I seen other than his beauty pleasing,
with its radiance, I would be among the losers.
I'd have been lost indeed.

O bough that has put the tawny spear-shafts to shame,
O bough swaying with the wine stock's red,
and a gazelle-fawn that has slain the lions of the lair!
O lion destroying the fortresses of heroes!

You rose from your people amid stars
You rose among your people with stars
that lit the darkness for travelers by night.
That light the dark for those astray.

Your brilliance evenings the eyes of all who look.

Oh, the joy of the glory you have won!
What glory have I won in you!
Indeed, you are firmly established in any station within it.
For you are firmly fixed, wherever you are found.

Nobility itself smiles at the traits

You have displayed, in your understanding of listeners.

Why does your face enchant the morning light,
The radiance of your visage gives joy,
and why do your body's curves captivate the boughs?
The bending of your branches sways the boughs.

Are you other than a place of kneeling for all people,
before which they have all fallen prostrate?
Who fall before you worshipping?

O Abu al-Walid, unsheathe the sword of love,
Abu'l Walid, unsheathe the sword of love
and dye its edges with the lovers' blood.
And dip its blade in the blood of lovers.

زخارفَ الخالين والحاسدين
The envious have embellished, concerning our union,
The envious ones have picked apart our union,
the gilded falsehoods of the loveless and the envious.
Spoiling the adornments of the intimate and hater.

They sought to overturn our affection; so strike them
They hoped to turn love away, but hurl at them
with a rebuff, and they will turn back humbled.
Their plots - let them retreat disgraced!
