Leave me alone with Najd—may I never bear my sword-belt

if I do not score its soil with spear-shafts.

And I shall surely churn the entrails of darkness toward the statue-like beauties,

and surely caress the sides of their necks.

Where perfume embroiders with its fragrance

the gazelles' paths and the sweep of cloaks.

Indeed, I passed by the dune, and lowing rose

from my camels, while my steeds echoed their neighs,

amid their dwelling-grounds and familiar haunts,

watered by tears in showers of recurring rain.

They pitched their domed tents in the hollow of the two valleys,

among keen swords and bending lances.

And gray doves call around them, delighted by their presence,

so at every bend a singer trills.

O ban-tree of the valley, it is sorrow enough for us

to exchange words with none but a valley's ban-tree.

Where are the gazelles, necks raised in the forenoon,

in your bend, and where are the days of Su'ad?

    وَنَأَوا وبعضُ الظاعنينَ فؤادي

    They came to water, and my tears were among the watering places;

they went far away, and my heart was among the departing.

May they be watered wherever their saddles were swept away

by headlong riding-camels—watered by evening and morning clouds,

whose downpour streams, as there stream from

the right hand of noble Abu al-Fadl his gifts.

    يرتاحُ للماءِ المروَّقِ صادي

    Eager for generosity, just as

    a thirsty man delights in clear water;

and rising in lineage above al-Simak,

and putting mountains to shame with his forbearance.

A judge: when I seek the justice of his judgments,

I never yield my reins to the tyranny of misfortunes.

Humble, while God raises his standing

above comparison with all other illustrious men.

He was not invested with judicial authority without piety; and can

a keen sword be worn without a sword-belt?

Bright-faced and openhanded when he sits with knees drawn up,

and when he gives, ample in bounty and spacious in his hall.

If pitch-dark night were clothed in his majesty,

its expanses would not be shrouded in blackness.

Praise wafts sweetly from him for

his fine character and noble birth.

So when we trade accounts of his eminence

in evening talk, we line our eyes with sleeplessness.

Songs of him drive the worn-out mounts when they tire,

so they roam enraptured, traveling by day and by night.

And when darkness lowers its curtains, and there hovers

a touch of drowsiness over the eyes of sleepers,

I roused my companions for night travel, and they found their way

by the radiance of his resolve's blazing star.

O bright brow of dark time, and refuge of the

banished man, and pasture for the seeker,

Accept from my praise verses whose composition almost

makes one forget the eloquence of Ya'rub and Iyad.

I am he whom kings desired, yet I did not turn aside

to any among them with new riches and ancestral wealth.

And they saw my tongue as sharp as a spearhead,

so they remembered it on every day of combat.

Had my ambition not shunned seeking their favor,

my possessions would not fear the ravages of depletion.

Be my champion, O champion of high honor, against

a time that assails the people of eloquence.

Time's drinking places do not run clear for us

unless you seek intercession for those who come to drink.

And as for the sons of this age, though flattery shows in them,

their grudges are like embers beneath ashes.

It is no wonder that you grew up among them:

    flowers may grow among thornbushes.

How strange that any of them should seek to outstrip you!

How could an ass aspire to outrun a noble steed?

    مَنْ ذا يُضاهي لجَّةً بثِماد

    Your eminence is too great for any other eminence to rival it;

who can match a deep sea with shallow pools?

May you ever walk proudly in ample robes of blessings,

    wide in their hems and cloaks;

and remain an adornment and a source of honor to the lands:

indeed, keen swords are the adornment of scabbards.
