    تُشَقُّ دياجيه كما شُقِّقَ البرد

    Lightning traveled from your dwelling while the night was black;

Its deep darkness is rent as a striped cloak is torn.

So it stirred longing in me, as ghada embers scorch,

And reminded me of a pledge, as nadd incense wafts its scent.

    فكلُّ خليلٍ بين أضلعه حقد

    The days have changed—even the one who loved me;

For every close friend has rancor between his ribs.

O you for whom I grieve at dusk and dawn,

Have you sworn to turn to treachery at evening or morning?

Show your mercy to a soul that melts, and an eye

That tears keep awake and sleeplessness pains.

And among what has enfolded my heart in sorrow is that I

See union as a watering place others reach, with no draught there for me.

And I did not know that your pledge was changeable,

And that you were an apostate from the faith of affection,

    يُشَبُّ على الأحشاءِ من حرِّها وقد

    Until anguish from your rejection assailed me;

A blaze is kindled upon my entrails by its heat.

Tell me, then, of your faithfulness: has it faded,

As the ruins have faded, or has a grave enclosed it?

May I be your ransom! What is this coldness? Was there not

A bond seen between us, like a necklace strung?

And whenever the slanderer went about with gossip,

Affection redoubled in sincerity, in spite of him.

What, then, has become of that pledge, whose trace has been altered?

So there is no union without rejection standing in its way.

Be gentle: let your close friend not be called a deserter,

For his limbs come apart from fear of separation.

Recall a brotherhood whose bond was, only yesterday,

Secure, but today it has no bond at all.

Betrayal, while love's anguish never leaves my heart?

And fear—how could that be, when longing fills my breast?

Ah, if only I knew—and suspicions are many—

Was it jest that wrought this estrangement, or earnestness?

The feast passed; I had not kohled my eyelids with a glance

Toward you; so its day turned black.

And have the slanderers erased, between me and you,

The path to goodwill—or was what lay between us a barrier?

Was it when the slanderers wept, choking with envy of us,

And the promise fulfilled my hopes in you,

That you took offense, with no reconciliation; you changed, with no goodwill,

And you vanished, with no meeting; you betrayed, with no pledge?

Is this the reward of longing, if you are fair?

Has love no claim? Is there no alternative to separation?

Earnestness? Yet you are playing with longing.

And what good is earnestness that good fortune does not aid?

    Let the soul's life depart with its own consent;

Even if my soul departs, affection will not depart.

May God's peace be upon you, as long as a grey dove coos,

And as long as early-season rain pours, and as long as thunder glorifies God.
