    فما ظعنتْ إلا بزُهر الكواكب

    Halt, you two, that we may borrow the light of those riding camels;

for they departed bearing only radiant stars,

and only moons from the tribe, shining in

places of rising and setting within their howdahs.

They traveled by night, while night's deep flood surged in waves,

with no ships but headlong, weary camels.

upon mounts wading through seas of darkness.

Nothing afflicts me but a passing cloud that stole my sleep

with the swift flash of unceasing lightning at night's end.

It flashed at Dhat al-Athl; between me and the tamarisks lay

the swift trot of the mounts and lean thoroughbreds.

I became longing's slain victim, and they were my mourners.

have all recoiled from the beloveds' glances.

We are indeed of a people whose souls fear

gazelles' eyes rather than spears and cutting swords.

Rainstorms pass over us, pouring down,

yet we shun them in favor of streaming tears,

through black nights before white-skinned, full-breasted maidens.

On many a pitch-dark night I cast off an equal measure

of grief within its piled-up blackness,

with every maiden who, if she shoots her arrow at you,

shoots from an eyebrow resembling Hajib's bow.

I breathed from her breath the fragrance of the east wind,

and shunned the upland east wind and the southern breezes.

Whenever darkness fell, I wore it

as a mantle over the abundant hair of her tresses.

by stars of jewelry in the sky of her bosom,

with fruit, and she came to intimacy's sweet watering places.

my kin and strangers, treacherously, along with them.

I greet him at the news with a homecomer's joy.

anything more dutiful or faithful than a thin-edged sword.

to a higher duty than honoring Ibn Wajib's name.

A blazing star: if night were clothed in his light,

it would strip its flanks of the garments of darkness.

And a garden of learning whose borders overflow

with an unerring shower of eloquence's heavy rain.

abundant in hearth-ash, supple of finger-joints,

they are unyielding, like untamable camel stallions.

    brides unveiled in rare jewels,

by darkness, they would spare it any need of stars.

nor hopes through poetry for a giver's robe of honor.

But I have adorned the virgin maidens of my speech

with the nobility and virtues that are yours.
