المتَسَربِلcloaked in خِذلاناًabandonment وخُسراناand loss
Say to Ibn Muljam, who bridles fires,
Say to Ibn Muljam, who ignited fires,
Cloaked in abandonment and loss:
The one cloaked in betrayal and loss,
عدَلتَyou turned aside عنfrom طُرقاتِthe paths of العدلِjustice ياO غَدرُtreachery
وخُضتَand you waded فيin الغَدرِtreachery أنهاراًrivers وغُدراناand pools
You turned away from the paths of justice, O treachery,
You deviated from the paths of justice, O treacherous one,
And waded through rivers and pools of treachery.
And you waded through betrayal like rivers and treachery.
ضللتَyou went astray فيon سُبُلٍpaths غرّاءَradiant واضحةٍclear

You went astray on radiant, clear paths,
You went astray on misleading, clear paths,
And never ceased straying from the path of truth.
And did not cease to wander aimlessly from the path of truth.
أفرطتَyou went to excess فيin الجهلignorance إذwhen فَرَّطتَyou were remiss منthrough حَمَقٍfolly

You went to excess in ignorance when you were remiss through folly,
You exceeded in ignorance when you charged out of stupidity
Until you killed an imam exalted in rank:
Until you killed a noble, eminent Imam.

The Messenger's son-in-law, Ali, Fatimah's husband,
The son-in-law of the Messenger, Ali, husband of Fatima,
And the best of those who adorned guidance and those who marred it;
And the best of those who adorned guidance and glory.

And father of the two luminous youths,
Were soul and sweet basil to the Chosen One;
Who were to the Chosen One a soul and delight.

And the gate to the city of all the sciences of religion,
The gateway to the knowledge of the entire religion,
So nothing eludes him, wherever it may be (reading uncertain).
So none can fully describe him wherever he may be.

Even if eras upon eras were to pass.

And one whose merits—recount them without restraint!
And of his virtues, speak without hesitation,
Indeed, our master surpassed what the sea contains.
Indeed, he surpassed what is in the sea, our master.

You erred, you erred, O Ibn Muljam, for indeed
You have erred, you have erred O son of Muljam,
You truly committed harm and sin.
You have come with harm and burden upon us.

And strayed from every reward, none of which you shall attain,
And you have been deprived of all reward you will not attain,
And openly committed offenses and disobedience.
And you came openly with defiance and disobedience.

And incurred displeasure and reproach on top of wrath,
And you were cursed with wrath and blame in anger,
Which you shall meet, without doubt, alive and dead.
You will meet it alive without doubt and in death.

And the people erred when they called you a worshipper of the All-Mer-
And the people have erred by naming you a devoted worshipper of the Merciful,
ciful; in defiance, you have challenged the All-Merciful.
But by opposites you have contended with the Merciful.

How much fitter it was to call you His rebel!
Those disobedient to you should not have called you that,
Indeed, you exceeded all bounds in disobedience and unbelief.
But you exceeded disobedience and disbelief.

So neither did the fertile land of Wosim water you,
Nor water the land of Imran ibn Hittan.
Nor did it water the land of Imran ibn Hittan.

From Hittan whom Allah burned with fire.

You are nothing but wretched, and he is like you in
Wretchedness, in which you both are utterly forsaken.
Wretchedness which makes you both wretched.

For it was clothed in falsehood and slander.
For they are clothed in falsehood and lies.

By God, it was nothing but a wretched blow;
By Allah, they are nothing but a blow that brought wretchedness,
So how can it gain favor from the Lord of the Throne?
So how can they attain satisfaction from the Lord of the Throne?

It ended in loss, short measure, and deficiency;
They resulted in loss, betrayal, and deficiency,
So how can you reckon him fullest in the balance among all people?
So how can you consider it the most just of scales?
