God is greatest! How many are this Chosen One's
How great is Allah, and countless are the miracles
Miracles, whose extent cannot be reckoned!
Of this chosen Prophet, that cannot be numbered
مَنwho ذاthis one يَحُدُّreckons الشُهبُthe shooting stars فيin أفُقِthe horizon of السَماthe sky
منwho ذاthis one يَعُدُّcounts القَطرَthe raindrops مَهماhowever much يَقطُرُit falls in drops
Who can number the shooting stars on the sky's horizon?
Who can count the shooting stars in the sky's horizon?
Who can count the raindrops, however much rain falls?
Who can count the raindrops, however much it pours?
منwho ذاthis one يَحُدُّreckons النَبتَthe plants أوor يُحصيcounts الحصاthe pebbles
هذاthis الأمرُmatter لاnot يُتصَوَّرُis conceivable
Who can number the plants or count the pebbles?
Who can count the plants or number the grains of sand?
Impossible! Such a thing cannot be conceived.
Impossible! This matter cannot be imagined
فتَنَعَّميso enjoy yourself ياO مُقلتيmy eye وتَنَزَّهيand take your pleasure
هذاthis الذيthat which قَدindeed كُنتَyou were قِدماًlong ago تنظرُawaiting
So rejoice, O my eye, and take your pleasure.
So delight, my heart, and become pure
This is what you had long awaited.
For this is what you had hoped to see long ago
وابكيand weep إذاif ماemphatic particle شئتِyou wish أوor فَلتَضحكيthen laugh
فالكُلُّfor all يُحمَدُis praised والمشوقُand the yearning lover مُحَرَّرُis freed
And weep if you wish, or else laugh.
Laugh or cry if you wish, both are praiseworthy
For both are praiseworthy, and the yearning lover is free.
And the longing lover is set free
إذfor عادَةُthe habit of المُشتاقِthe yearning lover يَبكيhe weeps دائماًalways
إنif يَنعَمواthey delight بالوَصلِin union أوor إنif يَهجُرواthey forsake
For the yearning lover's habit is to weep always,
For it is the wont of lovers to always weep
Whether they delight in union or forsake him.
Whether joined or separated from their beloved
فإذاso when دَنواthey draw near يَبكيhe weeps مخافاتِfor fear of النَوىseparation
وإذاand when نأواthey go far away شوقاًout of longing لَهُمfor them يَستعبِرُhe sheds tears
So when they draw near, he weeps for fear of parting,
When close, they cry fearing the pangs of loss
And when they go far away, he sheds tears of longing for them.
When apart, yearning makes them sleepless and distressed
