Hear the tale of love, O you whom I address.

Your brother has lost his way amid beauty.

If you deny what his wonders have revealed,

Look at his hair: its scorpions creep.

And look at his mouth: its stars shine.

He unsheathed the deadly swords of his gaze’s lashes.

Have you not seen death roaming there?

And look at my tears: they came to him flowing.

And look at his slender-waisted figure, swaying.

And look at the line of cheek-down: its scribe has alighted.

Because of him, the lovers’ hearts have melted,

After they had returned repentant to God.

Then longing’s armies intercepted them in pursuit.

When he captivated the hearts of all creation,

His tresses came to kiss his feet.
