Ah, would that I knew: shall I behold the House, that landmark?

And shall I one day come to Zamzam and drink my fill?

And who will grant me pilgrimage to the House in the finest company,

Urged onward by the camel-driver, who sang and hummed?

And who will let me spend the evening beside its chambers,

And wake among those who through it have risen to high honor?

And who will grant me the dear friend I have grown fond of,

So we are hailed aloud: ‘You two are the ones sought—you two!’

At times we circle that House, and at others

We visit those precincts and kiss them.

And sometimes we come to the Stone whose

Stature has soared until it towers to the sky.

We rub our cheek and our whole face upon it,

Nor do I count myself among those who touch it with the mouth alone.

And at times we pray, then hasten to Safa,

So it may cleanse the heart, bewildered and enslaved by love.

We hurry to attain our wishes, and at Mina

We camp among those who have camped for blessing.

And we harvest the fruits of kindness at its Arafat,

And scoop up goodness from it in all-embracing measure.

And we are freed from all punishment when there draw near

The stoning passes, whose pebbles burn away sin wherever it lies.

And we join those whose pilgrimage for God has been accepted,

And who have come to dwell in bliss in those gardens.

And would that I knew: shall I see Tayba, through which

The worlds grew sweet, in Najd and Tihama?

And will my eyes behold the noble tomb,

So I may be there reciting verse and chanting?

I address him aloud and ask for whatever I wish,

And hope my request will be granted by him in full.

And eloquent speech comes to my aid, and I turn back,

Once the words I weave about him fall into verse.

And I return with bags full, richly endowed

With the knowledge and forbearance I desire—and more, and more.

And the world serves me, and on the morrow I shall be

At a lofty rank, in an abode raised high.

The angels surround me on every side,

At the Garden of Firdaws—a magnificent triumph.

Thus that whole trade yields profit,

And its owner gains, from beginning to end.

And I offer to Muhammad, the best of creation,

A greeting of peace, sealed with the fragrance of good things.
