And O brother to the throngs of petitioners, O father of the

Poor, I stand humbled at your door.

For the rain-bearing showers cannot rival him.

    Spreads abundantly over all creation.

And O gatherer of the scattered parts of every virtue,

Of which poets fall short—indeed, prose writers too.

And who can seek to count the rain while the rain pours down?

He recounted finely crafted verse, ascribing it to the scholar,

“When night-visiting cares lay beside a young man,

And he set his thoughts to work by night, while the night was murky,

A man like Ibn Abbas shows you humility,

Yet another of Ibn Abbas's stature would boast.

And a man like Ibn Abbas dispels the anguish

That surrounds one whom calamities have met at dawn.

Befell me; today I have no guardian but you.

Yet no rival has ever surpassed your sea in abundance.

Reflect, the universe and gathering places close in upon me.

And if I recall the hereafter for a moment,

And contemplate myself on the day secrets are tested,

And see the crimes of mine that have sapped my strength,

And behold a back weighed down by offenses,

I weep; but can weeping help a man gone astray,

Whose eyes and inward sight have lost their way?

In religion and worldly life, and what is now at hand.

All my great sins and the lesser ones,

When the graves are overturned on the Day of Reckoning.

My intercessor with you is God—exalted be His majesty—

And he whose neighbor I am and near whom I dwell:

For he has no peer in all the worlds.

Upon him be God's blessing, then His peace,

And His good pleasure, as long as a bird flies on the horizon.

May they encompass the Chosen One's family and his companions, who

Are the radiant stars of those guided aright.

For him, and verdant branches sway,

And as long as a star crosses the horizons, and there journey by night

To you, Ibn Abbas, throngs and travelers.
